Among the heroines whose names arerenowned in Japanese classics, whose
memory Japan still delights to honor, as
marking a distinct historical era, noname has become more classical than
Tokiwa, the beloved concubine ofYoshitomo. Artists never lire of pictur-
ing her flight nfler the assassination of
her, lord, during the memorable fightwith the Taira, in 159.
Tokiwa was the daughter of a peasant, possessed of wonderful beauty, and wasthe object of Yoshitomo's tenderest af-
fection, During his flight from his en-
emies, Yoshitomo was killed in a bath-
room by hired assassins, Tokiwa fled,
hoping to preserve the heirs ol Mina-mot- o
line. It was winter, and lier pathlay through regions of snow, far from
the populous cities and orange groves ofher birth, With swell eg heart of griefand fear, she carried her baby upon her
breast, and urged two little sons at herfeet, one led by her hand, and the other
manfully bearing his father's sword, not
knowing where to go or how to subsist. Thus she wandci'ed on, trembling at ev-
ery sound, and fearing every f;ce,
knowing well the plot to exterminate theMinamoto family root and branch,

How t Cure a Cold.
Of all other menus of curingcolds, a medical journal says fast
ing is tne iruist eiwctuai. Leiwhoever has a cold cat nothingwhatever for two days, and his
cold will be gone, providing he is
not confined' to his bed becauseof taking no carbon into the sy- -
tern by food, but consuming thatsurplus which causes his dinease
by breath, lie soon ..carries off. his
disease by removing tho cause. This will be found more eflectuulif he adds copious water drinkingto protracted fasting. By thetime a person has fasted one dnyand night, he will experience afreedom from pain and a clearnessof mind, in delightful contrast tothat mental stupor and physicalpain caused by colds. And howinfinitely better is this method ofbreaking up colds, than medicine.especially, than violent poison

A Strange liivcr.
Ii9i'rr UepuMh-aa-.
An interesting iVt has been digcovered in connection with the KioMimhres which rises iu ihe uiountains of the southern part of NewMexico.
The river is known to sink before it readies Doming on theSouthern I'ucific. Dtningis builtia tho dry bed where the river evi
dently ran yeare ago. Wells of
jjood water have been found in
Doming, and tho river has thusteen traced that far since. But itwas not known where it went after
crossing the railway track. It lias been shown recently that
it cetttinties underneath the sur-face to the Moxi-cfu- i line, where itcrosses, into the state ofCliilitiahm. It then turns to the southeast, and, crossing the Mexican Central tracknear a station called Samulayeua,it empties into the liio Grandenear Camp Itice.
This discovery gives assnrancethai a considerable part of Chi-
huahua and southern New Mexicois susceptible of developmentwhich before was thought to boalmost worthless because of itsaridity. Wells can be sunk in
tiuny places, and in this way watermay be supplied to a large numberof cattle.
It is claimed that the Minibreurirer is not the only river whichflows in this way beneath the sur-face of northern Chihuahua, andthat a large area in that part of thestate is availablo (or agriculture.Abend a towu culled Palowas, which was started by some Frenchcapitalists near the northern bor-
der of the state, is growing; rapidly.

Washington seems to be fostering a
new industry, which at the present rate
promises to assume startling proportions. It is that ot grave-robbin- During the
last fortnight a number of graves have
been 'tampered with, and in several in
stances the bodies removed. Investigations which have followed have invari-
ably resulted in tracing the remains to
dissecting-table- s. The latest of this
character is the wife of a Baltimore &
Ohio engineer who caused an investiga-tion to he made, and while it was in
progress the body was re interred. The
mxious husband insisted upon havingthe grave opened and when this was
done, to his horror, he discovered thatin tho histe of the bodyhad been buried in the broken casketand was entirely nude, the grave clothes
having been stripped off by the resur-
rectionists. The interior of the casketwas soiled with mud, but the body was
returned fc it without even a sheet
wrapped about it. The casket, shatteredand battered, was then lowered into the
grave and the damp, soft earth thrownon top of it. When the grave was re-
opened it was found that the earth hadfallen through the broken casket and
the body was stained with mud. The
remains have been placed in the vault
temporarily to await decent burial. Theaffair will be thoroughly investigated.Meantime there is much excitement and
indignation among those most directlyinterested.

The Japanese have an interesting tradition of the creation;
"In the beginning all things wire inchaos. Heaven and earth were not
separated. The world floated in thecosmic mass like a fish in the water, orthe yolk in an egg. The ethereal mat-
ter sublimed and formed the heav-
ens, while the residuum fanned the
present earth, from the mold ot which a
germ sprouted and became a
being, fr-- which sprang all thegods.
"On the floating bridge of heaven ap-
peared a main and woman of celestial
origin. The male plunged his jeweledspear into the unstable waters beneath
them, and withdrawing it, the tricklingdrops fomcdan island upon which theydescended.
"The creative pair, or divine man and
woman, designing to make this island apillar for a continent, separated, themale to the Left the female to tho right,to make a journey around the island.Wh n they met the woman spake first, saying, 'How joyful to meet a lovelyman!'
'The man, offended that the first useof the tongue had been by a woman, demanded that the journey be repeated, after which he cried out exultingly,' How
joyful to meet a lovely woman!--
"Thus ensued the proper subjection;and this, according to the ancient loreof Japan, was the origin of the humanrace and the art of love,"

Nearly thirty years ago, when climb-
ing the side of the Raton mountain, andwhen high uo' above the present city ofTrinidad, we approached the hut of agray-haire- d old hermit. He had locatedbeside a little spring a thousand feetabove the valley. He told us he hadbeen there a long time had come to
the country before Fremont or LucianMaxwell, and had themountain of coal. Said he: "I shall yetbe the richest man of tbe earth. Rail-
roads and steamship may collapse;banks may fail and beiome worthless;but the necessity for coal will go on for
cer, and I shall supply the mid-cont- i
nent. I am here to watcfc this greatmountain of fuel. Tho Rothschildswould steal it. But I am here to watchwhen the sun nses anil when it goesdown, and shall be her until the rail-
roads come. I hear tbcirshrill whistleseven now. They are c nning from everypoint of the compass. They are comingto this Golcoada of Amciica for thatwhich is more precious than diamonds,"As we sat for an hour beside the cool
spring and listened to this "old man
cloqujut,'' we thought him crazy
thought him a lunatic but we remem-
ber him as the prophet of tbe Raton. He is dead now, but his predictions liveand are, being fulfilled.

The scpreme court of New Mexico hasmade an important dccisioiv.it it shallbe confirmed by the United States su-
preme court, in tbe famous Canon del
Agua and San Pedro case. The partiesto whom the grant was confirmed, bycongress several years agp claimed themineral aswcll as the agricultural grant. The courts holds that the act of confir-
mation o;dy applies to complete the
conveyance intended by. the Mexican
government, which never- has surren-
dered its right to minerals anywherewithin its borders, and also that theboundaries of the grant have been en-
larged through collusion between a for-m-
surveyor general and- the owners.
Thisgrant is located in Santa Fe countyand is, very valuable, including largecopper and gold deposi.s. If the courtshah be sustained the decision will opento the public a very extensive area ofthe territory from which prospectors andminers have hitherto been excluded.

situated, there exists a tremendous banana tree, the fiuit of
which, when cut trumvcraely, pie-sents- f

route he met two or three Navajoesof tho gambling tribe and they
followed htm out ol Gallup. Abouta week after this occurred, three
wandering burros, stripped of their
riggings, came up to Hitch's ranch
near Gallup, and were recognizedas those belonging to Gray. A
supposition pervaded the minds of
the men at the ranch that a mur-
der had been committed, andsearch was inaugurated. It result-
ed in finding the body of Gray be
tween Gallup and Defiance sta-
tions, in a lonely place where hehad been murdered and left to- he
devoured by coyotes. All his
stock of beads were gone, and, in
fact, he was stripped of the best
portion of his clothing. His re-
mains, which had lain on the open
plains for at least two wesks be-
fore discovery, wore almost en-
tirely devoid of flesh, but sufficient
remained, however, to identify the
body as that of the olJ mail car-
rier. That the murder was com-
mitted by the gambling Indians
that followed him. is a foregoneconclusion, for they will commit
all manner of crime to "secure
beads. No investigation, it is stat-
ed, was made into the murder.

less bills to extend the pensionlist. But among all these billshere is not one to increase the

soldiers, who were killed in battle
or died of disease contracted in the

shows a lamentable lack- of ga-

that they are more concernedabout the votes of.living soldiersthan in behalf, of' the widuws ofdead heroes.
