Good to Know!Integers are used in everyday situations. Positive integers are associated with gains, increases, and

deposits. Negative integers are associated with losses, decreases, and

withdrawals. Negative integers are also used to describe something that is

below sea level while positive integers describe something above sea level.

Good to Know!On a number line, the numbers get larger as you go from left to right.

On the number line below, the integer represented by the letter A is the smallest integer marked in the number line. Point E represents the largest integer marked on the number line.

Example 4Complete each statement using < or >.

a. –4 0 Since –4 is to the left of 0 on the number line, –4 < 0

b. –3 –5 Since –3 is to the right of –5 on the number line, –3 > –5

c. –6 7 Because –6 is to the left of 7 on the number line, –6 < 7.

Example 5The five states with the lowest temperatures on record are shown in the table below. List and graph the temperatures from least to greatest.

When the temperatures are graphed on the number line, the lowest temperature will be furthest to the left.
