MasterSingers, the February 12th tribute by the New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving to singers features a chorus of outstanding vocalists from all four Irving high schools. Conductor Sergio Espinosa opens the 8 pm performance with the Prelude to Wagner’s beloved opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, a simple love story complicated by the familiar tension between the old and new, the traditional and the progres-sive. The Overture reflects the pomp of the mastersingers song competi-tion, the dignified music related to the opera’s hero, Walther, and the busy contrapuntal music of the mastersingers themselves. The combined chorus of Irving students joins the orchestra to perform two of Mozart’s much loved choral pieces; Te deum and Ave verum. In 1769 the young teenaged Mo-zart composed his Te deum, a setting of an early Christian hymn. The Ave verum corpus was Mozart’s final completed choral work before his death in 1791 and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful pieces of

music ever composed. Next to come is Borodin’s In the Steppes of Central Asia, the picturesque symphonic poem describing a desert encounter between Russians and a caravan of Easterners. The program finale is Haydn’s Symphony No. 104, the final among the great “London” symphonies written between 1790 and 1795. These last twelve symphonies were distinguished by a more expansive instrumentation using trumpets, clarinets, and timpani, and expanded harmonic range, dramatic, slow first movement introductions, and minuets which often were borderline scherzi. The London Symphony, well-received on its premier, remains an audience favorite.

The Living Opera Announces 2008 Educational Outreach Tour

Girl Meets Boy in Puccini's La Boheme!

The Living Opera's Educational Outreach Tour is a great way to introduce children to the incomparable art of opera. Each spring, we bring an operatic presentation to schools throughout north Texas. These performances are designed to show children how accessible and fun opera can be, helping them to form a positive impression of opera.

"What's Going On?" Program For 2008, The Living Opera will present an interactive program called "What's Going On?" As opposed to presenting a short opera we have decided to make this year's program more edu-cational. The idea for the program came when a child was heard saying, "This is so stupid! I can't even understand what they are saying! What's going on?!" In this program we attack the language barrier head on. The program focuses on how opera can transcend the language barrier and tells a story that everyone most definitely understands. Students are exposed to how powerful the storytelling in opera truly is by addressing their two biggest complaints, op-era is "not understandable" and "in a foreign language". While we will admit the later, we strongly disagree with the former and have set out to disprove this to students. Our presentation, called "Boy Meet's Girl" is the self-contained last half of the first act of Puccini's masterpiece, La Boheme. This is not your traditional stuffy La Boheme. Gone are the "old" and "gray" Mimi and Rodolfo, these lovers are young, beautiful, and very similar to the couples students are likely to see in their local mall. We move the story from Paris France 1830, to Dallas Texas 2007. We are in the middle of a power blackout during a storm and thus the stage is set for one of the most famous candle scenes known in opera or theatre! THE DETAILS: Our Composer-in-Residence and Principal Guest Conductor - Gregory Sullivan Isaacs - will act as both MC and pianist on our journey through La Boheme. We will supply teachers with a brief study guide as well as a student study guide with information about the opera, the book on which it is based, a biography of the composer and librettist, biographies of the singers and Maestro Isaacs, something about The Living Opera, and mention of the transmutation of La Boheme into the Broadway hit - Rent, a show many are likely to at least be loosely aware of - most would be surprised to find out it started it's life as an opera! What is Cooperative Arts News?

The Mission: The CAN organization was created for the purpose of helping cooperative member arts organizations build audiences by supporting each other. CAN will send notifications to list members with news of member organizations' upcoming events and other arts news of interest. The Rules: 1. Since this is a "cooperative" of arts organizations supporting each other, member groups who

would like to post notices, agree to "receive" notifications from other member groups in return. Individuals will have the option at any time to "opt-out" if they choose not to receive future notifications by e-mailing the list manager.

2. In order to preserve the integrity and quality of the postings to this list and to prevent any unwanted "Spamming," all notifications that member groups want to send through this notification list must come through the list manager. Groups simply send an e-mail notification to the list manager with a descriptive write-up and it will be sent. If there are multiple notifications that need to go out, they may be grouped together to reduce the number of e-mails that are sent to the list.
