Unfortunately I missed the April dinner It isalways a good meeting getting together withthe OSU and OU student chapters Meetingthem and seeing our future engineers is alwaysexciting
We just finished our yearly Career Day event atthe end of April This is another great eventwhere we bring high school students to OSUrsquoscampus and give them tours of constructionsites around Central Ohio Thanks to BethMeek with BBCM Dr Carolyn Merry with OSUand Emily Wieringa with Union CountyEngineerrsquos Office for their efforts
The last lunch of the year is around the cornerAs usual the ASCE national president electKathy Caldwell will be in attendance giving herview and goals for her coming presidency Herbackground is in the structural engineering thesame as mine so Irsquom extra happy to have herwith us I certainly hope that yoursquoll be able tojoin us
Along with Kathy Caldwell being at the Maylunch shersquoll also be at the student mixer at theVarsity Club Wednesday the 19th Also wersquoretrying to get a meeting with consultants theevening of the 20th If yoursquore interested pleaselet me know so we can get this scheduled
Donrsquot forget the golf outing in June Jim Pajkand the Younger Members are working hard tohave another excellent day on the links Theirefforts always make it that much better Also if
yoursquod rather Dave Pritchard is coordinating abiker bash that same day where theyrsquoll meetthe golfers for dinner at the golf course
The June planning meeting is also comingsoon The board and leaders of otherprofessional engineering societies will be thereto schedule all of next yearrsquos lunch events Ifyou have any ideas let them know or betteryet let Mike Mazzoli know that yoursquoreinterested in attending
ASCE is working with Engineers WithoutBorders in many ways National is providingdifferent types of support and EWB is gettingmore young people involved in doing greatthings Our section has pledged support to theOSU student EWB chapter and we hope to beable to continue to develop our relationship withthem
Well this is my last presidentrsquos letter Irsquove beenon the board for five years and it has been anexciting time I have enjoyed meeting newpeople some of which are now going to be lifelong friends Irsquod like to thank them foreverything and thank each of you for theopportunity to learn so much while on theboard I really would encourage each of you toreach out and help There is a lot of good to bedone and ASCE gives that opportunityThanks again

The Central Ohio Section of ASCE held their10th annual Civil Engineering Career Day onApril 22 2010 In attendance were over 30 highschool juniors from over 10 different CentralOhio High Schools Robert Johnson withJezerinac Geers took us on a tour of the newOSU Student Union including the new verylarge ball room Dr Carolyn Merry with OSUand Dr Ken Walsh with OU presented to thestudents at lunch and in the afternoon TonyMoeller and Tyler Shane with Turner hosted atour of the new SciTech project (RadioFrequency Research Building) Thanks to allwho helped make the program a success onceagain

middot Addressing areas of interest to mem-bers of ASCE in the State of Ohio re-viewing policies and actions underconsideration by the ASCE Nationalboard and voting to make recommen-dations to the National Board
middot The Council has conducted a legisla-tive program for many years initially asan independent effort and currently incooperation with OSPE The programincludes cooperative monitoring of leg-islation with OSPE partial support of alobbyist (Colby and Company) andconducting a State Legislative Dayeach year
middot Sponsorship of the annual RobertOrsquoShea younger member award for apaper on engineering ethics which car-ries a $500 prize split evenly betweenthe author and the Section YoungerMember group or Student Chapter
middot Carrying out the annual competition forthe Ohio Outstanding Civil EngineeringAward for projects completed duringthe year in Ohio
middot Identifying Ohio projects that merit rec-ognition as Historic Civil EngineeringLandmark and submitting the applica-tion to the National ASCE
middot Funds awards to State Science Daycompetitors with first second andthird prizes to students competing atthe junior and senior high school levelsThe awards are targeted to science dayprojects related to civil engineering andserve to expand the studentsrsquo interestin civil engineering

ASCE is offering a motorcycle tour for non-golfers in coordination with the ASCE golf outingon June 25 The cost will be $35 for dinner atthe Darby Creek Golf Course located betweenPlain City and Marysville We typically start theride from the McDonalds at Rt 161 and Avery-Muirfield Dr in Dublin at about noon and finishat the golf course between 4 and 5 pm takingback roads to the northwest of Columbus with a
