Computer-Cooling BacteriaBOSTON LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY DESIGN PROJECT
BY MAXWELL KAZMAN
Purpose
Computers are getting increasingly powerful
Also very small
That’s a problem for cooling
Competing Technologies
Fans Loud
Big
Require space for air circulation
Rather expensive
Water Cooling Huge
Impractical for most users (no laptops or anything smaller)
Require a reservoir
Extremely expensive
The Design
Must include the following:
Generate electricity
Gather/Collect water split
Sustain high internal temperatures
Live in harsh environment (computer)
How the design works
One gene is always on and generates electricity with ATP pumps and protects the cell with a protien
The other engineered gene is on at first, makes a small amount of aquaporin proteins, and then turns itself off
There are lots of ATP pumps, so lots of electricity is made
There are not a lot of aquaporin valves, so water travels through the membrane not very often
When it does travel through the membrane, there will be enough electricity to split it, and it will split causing an endothermic process
Expected Results
Pretty simple
Alive? (Sufficient Food)
Water in air? Cooling? (Splitting Water)
1 1 1
0 1 0
1 0 0
0 0 0
Advantages
Bacteria is better than fans and water cooling systems because…
Its smaller
Its more effective (ideally)
Its more versatile
Bacteria in tape?Bacteria plumbing?
Potential Problems
Bacteria could escape
They are harmful to humans
They NEED water
Future Additions Handle energy better
Bacteria know when to use energy to reproduce
Become more efficient
Computer talking to bacteria Send quorum?
Turn on and off with computer’s needs (more efficient)
Become completely independent Require no external food source
Thank you
