COMMUNITY SERVICE

What is community service?
Community service is when a person or a group of people do something that benefits their community in some way. They could clean a park, collect items for charities such as Toys for Tots, or help the elderly in nursing homes.
What are the benefits?
• Teaches positive values, leadership, citizenship, and personal responsibility
• Empowers students as learners, teachers, achievers, and leaders
• Invites students to become members of their community• Teaches job skills and prepares students for careers after
college• Helps with community education• Contributes thousands of hours of service to people in
need, non-profit agencies, private sector companies, non-governmental and governmental agencies
How to Get Involved
• Participate in volunteer programs such as Habitat for Humanity, the Humane Society, and nursing homes.
• Join Boy Scouts• Join Girl Scouts– Both Boy and Girl Scouts have the opportunity to
earn the Eagle Award or the Gold Award. Both awards are based on carrying out a community service project.
Examples of Some Volunteer Programs
Habitat for Humanity• Nonprofit, Christian housing
ministry• Goal is to eliminate poverty
housing and homelessness from the world
• All people can join together with families in need to build houses
• Runs off of volunteer labor and donations of money and materials
American Humane Society• Nation’s largest and most
effective animal protection organization
• Work to reduce suffering and create meaningful social change for animals
• Confront nation and global cruelties such as dog-fighting, puppy mills, and clubbing animals for the fur trade through major campaigns

Relay for Life
• It is sponsored by the American Cancer Society to raise money for the fight against cancer.
• Anyone can participate.• It celebrates the lives of those who have battled
cancer, and remembers those who have been lost to the disease.
• The money that is raised finds cancer research, early detection and prevention education, advocacy efforts, and life-affirming patient services.
