Location
Fairfax County is bounded on the northand southeast by the Potomac River.Across the river to the northeast isWashington, D.C., across the river to thenorth is Montgomery County, Maryland,and across the river to the southeast arePrince George's County, Maryland andCharles County, Maryland.
Fairfax County is situated in the northeastern corner of Virginia, south of thePotomac River and west of Washington, D.C. Consisting of 395 square milesof rolling hills and coastal plains, Fairfax County is the largest county inVirginia in terms of population.. The county is known as a major center for U.S.and international corporate headquarters, technical and professional servicefirms, and trade and professional organizations. A highly skilled and educatedlabor force, coupled with a well-integrated transportation network includingaccess to three major airports, positions Fairfax County for continued businessgrowth and expansion.
Fairfax County is located 10 miles from downtown Washington, D.C.; 106miles north of Richmond, the state capital; 45 miles southwest of Baltimore,Maryland; and 192 miles northwest of Norfolk, Virginia.
Fairfax County is part of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria MetropolitanStatistical Area (MSA).

Community Facilities
Medical care in Fairfax County is provided by six fully accredited hospitals, two24-hour emergency care access facilities, and four urgent medical carecenters.
The INOVA Health System operates four hospitals, including the 656-bedInova Fairfax Hospital. Fairfax Hospital serves as a community hospital andregional medical center. Inova Fairfax operates a two-helicopter medi-vacforce as well as the only Level I trauma center and pediatric intensive care unitin northern Virginia.
Inova Fair Oaks Hospital serves central and western Fairfax with 151 beds.The hospital provides a full range of emergency, medical, surgical, critical,orthopedic, obstetric and pediatric care services. Mount Vernon Hospital insoutheastern Fairfax has 232 beds and provides acute care and most generalmedical services. The hospital is home to the nationally recognized Inovarehabilitation Center and Inova Joint Replacement Center. A number of urgentcare centers and specialized treatment programs for the elderly and long-termpatients are also operated by the system.
The 127-bed HCA/Reston Hospital Center, is a full-service medical/surgicalhospital serving western Fairfax County. The hospital offers a full range ofmedical services including 24-hour emergency care. Specialties includematernal/child health, inpatient and outpatient surgery, urological services,cancer care, and rehabilitation therapy programs.

The Fairfax County Public Library is the largest library system in Virginia with atotal circulation of 2 million items per year. The library records nearly fivemillion visits per year to its 20 branches, which are located in Fairfax Countyand Fairfax City. A notable specialty of the library is business referencematerials and information on state and local government. Reciprocal access toother libraries in the metropolitan Washington, D. C. area is available, as isaccess to more than 200 nationwide business and scientific databases.
Fairfax County has one of the largest concentrations of retail space on theEast Coast. More than 200 shopping centers including five super regionalmalls with over 750-plus stores are located in the county. Tysons CornerCenter and Tysons Galleria contain such stores as Bloomingdales, Macy’sSaks Fifth Avenue, Lord and Taylor, and Nordstrom, as well as dozens ofupscale boutiques, specialty shops, and restaurants. Fairfax Square featuressuch elite stores as Tiffany & Co., Hermes, and Gucci. Neighborhood andcommunity retail centers are abundant offering groceries, generalmerchandise, pharmacies, restaurants and personal services. History buffs will find many historic homes and sites within the community.Notable Colonial-period landmarks include George Washington's MountVernon, George Mason's Gunston Hall, Woodlawn Plantation, built by GeorgeMason's nephew, and Richard Bland Lee's Sully Plantation. ManassasNational Battlefield at Bull Run is located just west of Fairfax County and wasthe site of two significant Civil War battles. Arlington Cemetery adjoins theCounty to the east.
Fairfax County is also in close proximity to popular Washington, D.
