COMMON CORE MATHEMATICAL PRACTICESSPICING UP YOUR LESSON PLANS – Bethany Morton

WHAT ARE THE CCMP’S

“The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students.” –www.corestandards.org

They are included on each grade-level intro page of the Common Core State Standards, as a reminder to all of us that we should be incorporating these practices into our lesson planning.

THE CCMPs (see handout)

Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them

Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct viable arguments and critique the

reasoning of others Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision Look for and make use of structure Look for and express regularity in repeated

reasoning

How to relate them to the Common Core State Standards

Connect them to your lesson plans “Expectations that begin with the word “understand”

are often especially good opportunities to connect the practices to the content.” – www.corestandards.org Help them to understand by using the CCMPs

consider similar problems represent problems coherently justify conclusions apply the mathematics to practical situations use technology mindfully to work with the mathematics explain the mathematics accurately to other students step back for an overview deviate from a known procedure to find a shortcut

LESSON 1 (NEW) – WITH CCMP

LOOK OVER THE LESSON HANDOUT Added activity/experiment

Let’s try the skittle’s shake Let’s try the 100 dice throw

Precision – charts and graphing Approached the lessons differently More group discussion about the topic

Less practice problems/drilling

LESSON 2 (OLD) – S.A. & Volume

LESSON 2 (NEW) – WITH CCMP Persevere in solving problems (a hard

problem) Group work – defend arguments Presentations or gallery walks Alternate ways to solve the problem Precision – measurement

A Brief Review

COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS

WHERE WE’RE HEADED(www.isbe.net)

The Illinois State Board of Education has adopted new academic standards for K-12 education known as the Common Core State Standards.

The goal of these standards is to better prepare Illinois students for success in college and the workforce in a competitive global economy.

The state’s previous standards were adopted in 1997.

The new standards aim to provide clear, consistent academic benchmarks with “fewer, clearer and higher” academic standards.

TIME FRAME (www.isbe.net)

PHASE I: Adoption, Communication, and Coordination (June‐End of 2011 school year)

PHASE II: Communication, Resource Design, and Design of Implementation System (ongoing)

PHASE III: Transition, Implementation, and Technical Assistance (ongoing)

The transition process should begin with local review and discussion. The new assessment system will be in place 2014-15.
