Dear Graduates:
Warmest congratulations and good wishes to the Class of 2016, and to their families and friends on Commencement Day 2016! Although one door is closing, innumerable others are opening before you, just waiting for you to step through them. Never before in our nation’s history have college graduates had more opportunities to contribute to the common good than now. Whether it be in the community, private industry or public service, to name but a few, your UC education and experiences have provided you with the
knowledge and abilities to make a difference in the lives of many others. As Robert F. Kennedy once noted, “The future will be shaped in the arena of human activity, by those willing to commit their minds and their bodies to the task.”
On this triumphal day, I challenge you to commit your newly earned UCLA degree and all that you have learned to bring hope, compassion and healing to a troubled world. You can shape the future and, from what I know of our graduates, if you put your mind to doing just that, the future will be a bright and hopeful one. Go Bruins — we know you’ll make us proud whatever door you choose!
Most sincerely,
Janet NapolitanoPresident

In 2008, she wrote and directed the celebrated adaptation of the best-selling novel The Secret Life of Bees. The all-star cast included Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Paul Bettany, Jennifer Hudson, Sophie Okonedo and Alicia Keys. The film won two People’s Choice Awards and two NAACP Image Awards.
Her third feature, Beyond the Lights, was released in 2014 and garnered an Oscar nomination for best song. The love story, set in the music world, stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Nate Parker, Minnie Driver and Danny Glover. It received rave reviews and landed on a number of top critics “Best of 2014” lists including The New York Times, The Washington Post and Vulture.
Prince-Bythewood studied at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, where she received the Gene Reynolds Scholarship and the Peter Stark Memorial Scholarship. Upon her graduation, she was hired as a writer on the hit NBC sitcom A Different World. She continued to write and produce for network television series such as the WB’s Felicity, Fox’s South Central and NBC’s Sweet Justice before making the transition to directing.
Her television directorial debut was the CBS Schoolbreak Special What About Your Friends, which earned Prince-Bythewood an NAACP Image Award for Best Children’s Special and two Emmy nominations for writing and directing. She also won a Community Service Emmy Award for her work with BET’s Rap-It-Up campaign.
Prince-Bythewood, along with her husband Reggie Rock Bythewood, is currently writing, directing and producing Shots Fired, a 10-hour special event series for Fox, which will air in Spring 2017. She will follow that with the film adaptation of the searing novel An Untamed State for Fox Searchlight, which she is co-writing with celebrated author Roxane Gay, and directing.
Prince-Bythewood is proud to fund a scholarship for African American students enrolled in the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television’s film program. She resides in Southern California with Reggie and their amazing sons Cassius and Toussaint.
