Commas

Commas in a Series

A comma (,) tells your

reader where to pause.

Commas help the

meaning of a sentence

clear.

A series is a list of

three of more items in a

sentence.

Example #1

I like to dance, sing,

and play my violin.

A conjuction, such as

and or or, is used before

the last item in a series.

You MUST use a

comma before the

conjunction.

Example #2

Everyone will sing,

dance, or play an

instrument.

Example #3

She will play the

saxophone, trumpet,

and flute.

Do NOT use a comma if

a sentence lists only two

items.

Example #3

I play the guitar and

piano.

Miss Fellin played

softball soccer and field

hockey.

Miss Fellin loves to

swim hike and

snowboard.

Miss Fellin loves to

travel read and work.

Miss Fellin has one dog

one turtle and two cats.
