PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
As we welcome our school
community back for the start of
Term 3 we look forward to the
many exciting projects that will
commence or continue this term.
Y12 are currently preparing for
their HSC and have entered their final term of
school life. We look forward to spending this last
term with them and encourage all Y12 to work
closely with their teachers and their support staff
to work very hard to put the final polish on their
HSC preparation. We thank their Year Advisers,
Mrs W O’Connell and Miss M Fullbrook as well
as their Deputy Principal, Mr P Kanaan for their
tireless efforts in supporting Y12 over the years
and getting them to this point. We look forward
to the end of Y12 celebrations planned for late in
this term.
Our preforming arts students are also doing final
preparations for their HSC practical performance
in Dance while other students are preparing to
submit their major works in subjects such as
Industrial Technology Timber and Visual Arts in
coming weeks. We wish them well and enjoyed,
very much, seeing them recently perform at the
HSC Showcase. It is always great seeing our
talent being developed and students being
courageous in getting up on stage and performing
in front of their peers. Thank you to all the
teachers and support staff who have been helping
the students prepare.
We recently delighted in seeing our Bring It On
students compete against other schools in the
Dance Competition at Stanhope Gardens. They
did an exceptional job and were clearly among the
best schools and this was despite a major technical
fault with the music, mid-performance! Whilst
the results on the night did not go our way, the
community rallied behind the students to access a
Wild Card entry to the finals. This required the
donations of over 3,000 cans of food for the
Salvation Army (a great cause!). What a generous
and supportive community we have. We thank all
that supported the students because they were

successful in winning the Wild Card entry to the
finals in September. Congratulations on the
tremendous work done by all the students,
mentors, teachers, parents and family / friends.
We especially acknowledge the choreography and
coaching work by our very talented senior
students, Jiroh and Jireh Mamea, who have
continued to lead this dance group and
demonstrate their exceptional talent; both being
selected as part of the Urban Dance Crew that will
perform in the State Dance Festival and School
Spectacular! We also thank our dance teacher,
Mrs A Ciocca for her tireless commitment to the
students.
Unfortunately, our Sydney Pacifica group was
unable to perform recently after months of hard
work and preparation. There were some
organisational issues that arose between the
organisers and the venue and this sadly affected
the schools who were ready to perform. Our
students, teachers and community members had
put in many hours of hard work into learning and
practicing the traditional dances they would have
performed. This included much time after school
and during the school holidays. Costumes were
also made. We thank everyone involved for their
dedication to these students as they are wonderful
opportunities for our students to step up and lead,
as they always do. We are providing
opportunities for the students to perform at school
to share and celebrate their beautiful culture. This
will include at the upcoming Showcase evening.
So, look out! They are worth watching!
On a recent weekend, our School Executive came
together for the 2017 Colyton High School
Executive Conference. Business was all about
commencing work towards the next School Plan
(2018-2020). Colyton High School is entering a
very exciting period where we are focusing on
moving our school from being a very good school,
as measured against the School Excellence
Framework, towards being a great school! The
School Excellence Framework is part of the
Department of Education’s support to clearly
identify what it takes for a school to excel and
plan towards achieving that excellence. Our three
strategic directions will be in the domains of
Learning, Teaching and Leading. We will be
focussing on developing and embedding strategies
and programs that work to connect our students to
each other, to their school and to education. We
will provide intensive support for students to
achieve academic and social success and continue
to thrive as aspirational, resilient and engaged
learners. These outcomes will include external
measures such as the HSC, NAPLAN (Literacy /
Numeracy) and VALID (Science) tests. To help
us build a collaborative, cohesive School Plan, we
will be creating opportunities for our whole school
community to contribute, so watch out for
surveys, focus groups and meeting invitations in
coming months. This includes our regular P&C
meetings on Monday nights in Week 4 and Week
8 each term.
Thank you to all our school community including
parents and carers, for your ongoing support as we
continue to build Colyton High School as a great
school for your child. We are a very busy school
with so many valuable projects happening and that
would not happen without the dedication and
tireless work across the whole school.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S
REPORT
As I write this newsletter entry, I
hope that every one of my students
and their loved ones are in good
health. Through this medium, I would like to
welcome everyone to semester 2. This semester is
a start of a new chapter in the learning of our
students. I would ask all students to reflect on
semester one and build a profile of what was good
and what needs improving. I have read many of
the Y7 and Y10 report comments. I am happy to
say that the majority of the comments were
positive as well as encouraging. The message to
students is that if semester 1 was not very
productive for you, do not despair as you have
semester 2 to rectify your behaviour, effort and
work towards attaining a very good semester 2
report.
My Y7 cohort continue to live up to the high
expectation that we have of them as future leaders
of the school. It is very heartening and rewarding
to see a cohort of students who hold themselves to
such a high esteem and continue to deliver
excellent educational and behavioural outcomes. I
thank all parents for their support of the high
expectations that we have of the cohort. I have
had many discussions about uniform with parents
and am thankful that they have a regard for
uniform. I understand that uniform is a work in
progress and we have a lot of work to do before
the whole school is in full school uniform. I need
the support of all parents so that we can bring
this vision to fruition. The school is willing and
able to support all students who need help in this
area.

NAIDOC Assembly
To celebrate NAIDOC week, students in the Liven
Deadly program performed a welcome dance and
traditional dances of the Emu and Kangaroo, did
acknowledgement of country and spoke about their
kinship and connection to country. This was a
special and joyous experience for the students
involved, providing them with affirmation that they
can be proud of their Aboriginal heritage and that
they are making a valuable contribution to the life
of Colyton High School.
The school community embraces celebration of the
different cultural groups within our school
demonstrating a genuine interest and acceptance.
The cultural diversity at Colyton High School
provides us with the opportunity to share and learn
from each other, so that we build a strong
foundation of respect and tolerance.
The focus of NAIDOC week this year is Language
Matters. An easy way of helping to preserve
Aboriginal languages is to use words in our daily
speech. Start today by greeting people with worimi
ngani? The Darug equivalent of “hello, how are
you”. If you are interested in learning more words

selection form must be returned.
During Parent Teacher Night, you will be able to ask the teachers about the subjects and you can come to the
Common Room upstairs in A Block, where Miss Harman will be available to explain the subject selection
process and answer questions about subjects for you.
Creative Arts
Y7 Visual Arts Library Exhibition
On display in the library are some fantastic paintings by Y7. These paintings are of sunflowers and are a part
of the Still Life unit. Each painting reflects the student’s individual style and displays how well they can
develop compositions, mix colours and produce a large scale image.

Just a reminder that the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is already underway for
students in year 7 to 9. Online registration and entries must be completed by the August 25
2017.
Remember, you need to read 20 books from the PRC list, 5 of which can be personal choice
books. Only 2 books from a series may be included, additional books from a series can be

This year, we have introduced an extra incentive for students to participate in the PRC,
however I haven’t seen many students come to claim their rewards at the various stages.
Please don’t forget to come and see me as I will backdate your rewards. Once you have
completed the challenge and your reading record is validated, you will be eligible for:

High Impact Program (HIP)
At the end of last term, we organised two HIP programs in collaboration with BEACON and our local business
community partners. Both the programs were focused on the transition from secondary school to further
education, employment or training. Students met the employers directly and asked questions on different
topics. Representatives from Bunnings, Cummins, Komatsu, and Beacon shared their experiences with
students. Students developed communication, teamwork, social, and networking skills during the program.
Both the sessions were highly successful.
Western Sydney Careers Expo It was one of the major events attended by our Y10,Y11 and Y12 students. Students were very excited as they
received the required information directly from the representatives of TAFE, Universities and other private
organisations.

BIG THANKS TO OFFICEWORKS!! Last term Ms Pope received a huge donation of stationery from Officeworks, Penrith. Colyton High School
received 44 pencil cases filled with pens, pencils and everything necessary for school equipment. Hopefully
this will make it easier for many of our students. Ms Pope would like to acknowledge, and kindly thank
Rosie from Officeworks Penrith, who organised this and donated it to our school. We were overwhelmed by
their generosity. What a great, community-minded organisation they are! Thanks, Officeworks!
