One Candle in a dark room...

Linear assumes that each candle contributes the same amount of light to the overall level that our eyes can see

In Log the apparent change in brightness between one candle and two is the same to our eyes as between two candles and four.

In linear each step in exposure is a uniform increment

In a log each step is larger than the previous one

[ie for each f-Stop up on a camera you double the amount of light] Linear Gamma Curve

Human eye = LogCelluloid Film = LogComputer Screen = LinearVideo camera sensor = Linear

Cameras apply a Gamma curve to the Linear information from the sensorComputer screens apply an inverse Gamma curve to interpret Log images on a linear display

Log images have a perceptually greater dynamic range by having slightly less range in the mid-tones and more levels of exposure in the shadows and highlights
