COLLEGE TRANSITION INITIATIVE

Original Vision• 2006 - WV Legislature provided an opportunity for
the “middle” group of students to access college courses during high school – Focus was on First Generation College going students– Eligible students with minimum 2.2 GPA– Students that were in skill pathway or career technical
student• Initially, each Community and Technical College
received approximately $33,000 per year to fund two (2) cohorts of 20 students per Community College
New Vision• Partner with Career and Technical Centers • Expose and prepare Junior and Senior students
for career pathways tied to regional economic needs and to Community and Technical College Programs of Study
• Offer a 1 hour College Transition course instead of a 3 hour course
• Uniform syllabi, textbooks, and learning objectives, but with Flexible delivery methods
Partnering • Transition Coordinator will work directly with CTE
Director or Administrators• Tuition and books are free to student/paid for by
Legislative funds (Students do not keep books)• Career Centers determine students/classes that
will participate• Students are registered and admitted as a
Community and Technical College Student• 15 hours of instruction are required for the 1 hour
course
Becoming a Successful College Student means
• Learning to manage time• Effectively applying personal learning styles• Utilizing proven test taking strategies• Building a professional resume and cover letter• Practicing successful interviewing techniques• Early / Accurate FAFSA and college application
completion

How is it Working Now?
“I never thought about going to college until the College Transition program. My teacher showed me even I could do it. She also showed me what I needed to do to get admitted, get financial aid and continued to help me during my college years. I just graduated with my 2 year degree.
