Lion to build internet ordering systemfor chemical products

In 2003 Lion Corp will launch aninternet-based system which willconnect outside sales agents andgroup production units, offering itscorporate customers an orderingsystem for products includingdetergents and surfactants. The moveshould enable the firm to reduce itsstaff in this area from ten to five. Lion’ssales of chemical products came toYen 33 bn in the year ended Dec2001, about 10% of its overall sales.

Kao increases waste-tracking toreduce waste output

Kao Corp has started to track wastegenerated in the production of 260products, including shampoo, soapand laundry detergent, on a process-by-process basis. For example,investigations into the processes usedto produce shampoos and rinsesenabled the company to reduce wastegenerated by filling processes by 139tonnes/y. By fiscal 2010, Kao intends tocut its overall waste output from 5000tonnes, the fiscal 2001 level, to lessthan 3000 tonnes.

Cosmetics production without animalexperiments soon

The EU parliament and the EUcouncil of ministers have agreed onan amendment to the EU cosmeticsdirective under which cosmeticcompanies will soon have to foregoanimal experiments when developingsoaps, shampoos, or skin creams.Under the amendment, animalexperiments would be banned from2003 for all cosmetics whose effectson humans can be tested by approved

alternative methods. This affectsaround 30% of available cosmeticsand a total of 8000 chemicalingredients. For those areas for whichthere are no alternative tests, animaltests can be used until 2009. Atransition period of 10 years wasagreed for three particularly importantseries of tests with which the toxiceffect of certain sensitive sensiblematerials on humans is studied.
