Foreword
The Langara College Coat of ArmsThis manual has been developed for use throughout the organization to ensure corporate consistency and to help maintain
our institutional identity. It covers the basic guidelines for using the various Langara Coat of Arms identities but, from time to
time, space constraints or other special formats will necessitate exceptions to these guidelines. Under such circumstances,
or any situations not covered in this manual, please contact the Langara College Communications and Marketing Services.

COAT OF ARMS
1.0HistoryInMay2009,Langara’sBoardpassedaresolutiontoapplytotheCanadianHeraldicAuthority(CHA)foragrantofarmorialbearings.ThatresolutionsparkedacollaborativeprocesswithintheCollegetocreateournewCoatofArms.Agroupthatincludedfaculty,staff,analumnus,aformeremployeeandamemberofthecommunity,workedtogetherwiththeHeraldtoidentifypotentialelementstoincludeinthearms.Students,alumni,andemployeesweresurveyedtoprovidefeedbackonthoseselections.ConsultationswereheldwiththeMusqueamFirstNation,uponwhosetraditionallandsLangarasits,regardingappropriatesymbolstoincludeinthedesign.Thecommitteereviewedmanydraftsofthedesign,andinthefallof2013,PresidentTrotterapprovedthefinaldesign.PainterLindaNicholsonandcalligrapherShirleyMangioneattheCanadianHeraldicAuthoritythenworkedtocreatetheLettersPatent,whichLangarareceivedinthesummerof2014.
COAT OF ARMSELEMENTS

ElementsARMS: TheXshapesymbolizesthecollegeasacrossroadswherestudentsfromvariedbackgroundsmeetandthenfollowvariouslifepaths.ItalsoalludestotheLangaracampus,whichfeaturesangularbuildingssurroundedbygreenspace.ThebookindicatesthatLangaraisaneducationalbody,andthecherryblossomsareafeatureofVancouverinthespring.
CReST:Thepantheonrepresentsimagination,achievementandthenaturalworld.TheuseofgoldstarsongreenreferstothearmsoftheSpanishadmiralJuandeLangarayHuarte,forwhomtheCollegewasnamed.Themariner’scompassalsoalludestotheearlySpanishexplorers,aswellasthecollege’sroleinguidingitsstudents.
MOTTO:ThisLatinphrasemeans“Knowledgeisfreedom”.
SUPPORTeRS:Thefalconisthemascotofthecollege’sintercollegiatesportsteams.Thebinarycodeontheircollars(meaning “L” and “C” for Langara College) honoursthecollege’scommitmenttoinnovationininstructionalinformationtechnology.Thebaseofrivergrassrepresentsthelocationofthecollege’scampusinthetraditionalterritoryoftheMusqueamNation,“Musqueam”meaning“wheretherivergrassgrows”.
FLAG: ThisfollowsthestructureoftheNationalFlagofCanada.

Tomaintainconsistency,theformoftheCoatofArmsshouldnotbealteredinanyway.Itshouldalwaysbetakenfromamastercopyprovidedwiththisguide.TherearefouracceptableformsoftheCoatofArms:

Minimum SizeToprotectthelegibilityoftheCoatofArms,itmustneverbereproducedsmallerthan1.25”inwidth.

Minimum Clear SpaceTheCoatofArmsshouldalwaysbesurroundedbyaminimumclearspacearoundthelogotopreserveitsintegrity.Tomaintainclarityandimpact,thelogomustneverappeartobecrowdedbycopy,photographsorgraphicelements.
Ensure 0.5 inches clear space around the Coat of Arms in all applications.
COLOuR PALETTE

Colours Itispreferredthat,wheneverpossible,theCoatofArmsbeusedinfullcolour.Therehavebeenversionsofthe

Coat of Arms (Crest) Symbol Langara’sidentitysystemincludestheCoatofArms,whichismadeupofvarioussymbolsandelements,isimportanttoourhistory.Thissymbolmustretainitsintegrityatalltimesandcannotbechanged,alteredoraffectedinanyway.
RULeS OF USe
UseoftheCoatofArmsisreservedforimportantceremonialpurposes,namelyofficialinstitutionaldocumentssuchasparchments,transcripts,andawards,andconvocationmaterials.AnyotherusemustreceivepriorapprovalfromCommunicationsandMarketingServices.
ThesymbolshouldbeusedwheneverpossibleinitscorporatecolourorGreyscalethereoforinblackandwhitethereofunlessotherwiseauthorizedbyCommunicationsandMarketingServices.
Thesymbolmaybeusedasa“watermark”or“digitalwatermark”inprintedmaterialsorindigitalpresentationssuchasaPowerPointpresentation.Inthisinstancecaremustbeusedtoensurethatthesymbolhasenoughcontrastfromthebackground.Theamountoftransparencyappliedisdependantonthesituationandtheartist’sdiscretionofwhatworksbestinaprintedordigitalapplication.
Coat of Arms Shield Itispreferredthat,wheneverpossible,theCoatofArmsberetainedinitsintegrity.However,elementsoftheCoatofArmscanbeusedseperatelywherenecessarytocommunicateorenhancethelookofprintedanddigitalitems.TheShieldandBannerTextaretheonlytwoelementsallowedandareavailableasseparateprint&digitalfiles.
