Springtime Is Almost Here!
Dear Members and Friends of First English, As I drove to First English this morning, through the most snow and ice we have
experienced yet this winter, I had thoughts of Springtime! Not so strange or odd
you might say? What I was really thinking about and pondering was how quickly
the Christian season of Lent will be here and all that will mean for us as the
church.
The word “lent” actually means springtime. In the church Lent is traditionally a
six-week period of abstinence and repentance in preparation for Easter. Lent will
begin on February 18th this year – Ash Wednesday, just a few short weeks away,
and continue through Maundy Thursday, forty days later.
Lent is a time for reflection when we confront our own sinfulness and wayward-
ness from the ways of God. It’s a time for acknowledging our need for forgiveness
and cleansing. You might remember it best if you refer to it as “spring cleaning.”
The point of repentance is not to remain down-trodden in the gloom of our sin,
unable to experience the life-giving grace we share in Christ, but to be prepared
to hear and receive the gospel, as if for the first time.
Lent offers us the opportunity to allow ourselves to be consumed by God, to
spend time reflecting on our sinfulness, while at the same time experiencing
God’s great love for us through all of our struggles. We have much reason to look
forward to spring—we have hope in Jesus!
Lent offers the perfect opportunity for us to take part in a Lenten discipline as a
community of faith. Church is, after all, not a building or worship space, it is the
communion between people.
Here at First English, in addition to our regular Sunday opportunities for worship,
we will also offer two services each Wednesday during Lent along with a meal.
Wednesday morning at 10:30 am followed by lunch
Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm preceded by dinner

Notes from Pastor Krister Ulmanis:
Dear friends, First English entered last November into a new phase in its history – the process of a Call for a senior pastor. With the realization that this is only the 3rd time in the last 64 years (or so) a change in senior pastors have taken place at First English (Pastors Keppler, Schmidt, and the new pastor to come) it is easy to understand that there is some anxiety about this time of transition, from the old and familiar to the new and unknown.

Let me begin by giving you my assurances that the congregation will be taken care of in this transition time. As an interim pastor my role is to provide stability in the life of the congregation so that you are assured that people and programs will be taken care of in the interim basis. I am 100% committed to stay at First English until the end of this process when you know that a new pastor will be arriving. Our time together will be times of maintaining what is familiar, while at the same time create new beginnings for the congregation. It will be an opportunity to experience some new changes in preparation for the new pastor, who will no doubt introduce some changes of his/her own. With the arrival of a new pastor, no doubt things will not look the same, not even the very thing you are so familiar with.
…the Call Committee…
Both in the worship guide insert and in the CLEF you will find the names of the members of the Call Committee - a group of people that are working diligently on behalf of the congregation. This committee was already formed and at work when I arrived. They are appointed and report to the Congregational Council and their task is two fold: 1….to develop a Congregational Profile and submitting it to the Synod Office. A key element of this document will be discerning the future mission and God’s will for the congregation, and describing what First English is looking for in the new pastor. This document has been created and is on the ELCA website for all pastors in the ELCA to see.
2…receive names from the Synod of candidates the Synod feels meet the Congregational Profile, review these candidates, select those to be interviewed, and conduct the interviews. The Call Committee will ultimately recommend a candidate to Church Council who will then hold a meeting for a Congregational vote whether or not to issue a Call to the person recommended. As I attend the Call Committee meetings I have been impressed with the diligence and thorough-ness as they do their work. The people of First English can rest assured that the Call Committee takes their work very seriously.
…support the Call Committee… Although there is a sense of confidentiality involved in the work of the Call Committee the people of First English can take an active part in its work. Here are two important ways you can do this….. …Keep the Committee and its members in your daily prayers that the Holy Spirit guides their work. …Have patience with them and understand that this is a process that will take time, and it is important that it take all the time it needs for the best possible result, and there is no set deadline. A Call process in the ELCA can take as short a time as a year, up to two years or even longer. We all need to remember that it isn’t the time of the process that is important but the outcome - the arrival of the new pastor, carefully selected by the diligent work of the members of the Call Committee. Pr. Krister was informed this past week by US authorities that he is not eligible to work in the United States until his work visa has been officially transferred from St. Paul to First English. He will return as soon as all paperwork has been processed in an appropriate manner, and is working from home until this process has been completed.

We are still receiving candidate profiles from the Synod Office, and review them as they are received. FEELC COUNCIL MEETING January 18, 1915
The meeting was called to order by President Marc Simone at 7:35 P.M. Pastor Veres offered the opening prayer. SECRETARY’S REPORT: Claudette Momenee moved, Waynette Hostetler seconded, the minutes of the December meeting be accepted. Motion carried. TREASURER’S REPORT: Pam Southard Pam Southard moved, John Nyquist seconded, the report be accepted. Motion carried. BOARD OF STEWARDSHIP: Waynette Hostetler The Board is recommending the annual salary of the Facility Coordinator be raised from 10% to 15% of the building use income because that salary has never been raised since the s inception of the position. Waynette Hostetler so moved, Pam Southard seconded the motion. Motion carried. FINANCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT: John Nyquist John is currently working on the fourth quarter contributions. They must be out by the end of of the month. BOARD OF CHURCH PROPERTIES: Marc Simone The installation of the columbarium will begin this week. Pam Southard moved, Waynette Hostetler seconded we notify the congregation of the action, because, when the Congregation authorized the construction of the columbarium it was determined the purchase fee of a niche would be increased from $1,500 to $1,800 when the construction began. The congregation is to be notified by Feb. 1 that the fee would be increased as of Easter Sunday, Apr. 5. Motion carried. The Chili Cook-off which this Board is sponsoring will be held Feb. 28. Christ the King Lutheran Church will join us in presenting the event with the proceeds being evenly divided. Chris Simone moved, Claudette Momenee seconded the Board be allowed to serve beer and wine at the Cook-off and that the Board apply for the Liquor License. Motion carried. BOARD OF EVANGELISM: Patty Foster Feb. 8 will be the New Member Reception. Board Chairpersons are reminded that a representative from each Board is needed at the Reception. The ads for Holy Week will be printed in the C & G Newspaper and the Grosse Pointe Times. It will no longer be printed in the Grosse Point News because of cost. BOARD OF SOCIAL ACTION: Diann Ohman Bag lunches will be packed on Feb. 11 to be delivered to Central Methodist Church in Detroit for distribution to the homeless. The confirmation students will participate also. BOARD OF PARISH EDUCATION: Chris Simone The Nursery has been staffed and is functioning well. The Board will do the Feb. 25 Lenten Lunch. Randi Kohler is administrating the Facebook Page. BOARD OF FELLOWSHIP: Claudette Momenee The Board meets on the 2nd Sunday of the month in the Fellowship Hall after the last service. The Lenten Lunch and Dinner sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the main hall. The lunches usually have from 12-15 people in attendance and the dinners from 30-50 people. A Pierogi Class will be held in March. The exact date is to be determined.

BOARD OF YOUTH MINISTRY: Renata Four of our youth, one guest and Renata attended the gathering in Lansing. Seven youth will attend the National Gathering in Detroit this summer. Feb. 6 from 6:00-9:00 P.M. an Evening of Music will be sponsored by the Music Teachers upstairs at which the youth will sponsor a bake sale. There will be a small fee at the door. The proceeds from the sale and admission will go to the Youth Scholarship Fund. Fri 27-28 will be the 30 hr. famine. BOARD OF WORSHIP & MUSIC: Sandy Ford & Jane Stevens The Board is recommending the purchase of a license for the Sunday and Seasons Worship Planner at a fee of $379. John Nyquist so moved, Jane Stevens seconded the motion. Motion carried. This will allow us much more freedom with the printing of the service in the bulletin. WOMEN OF THE CHURCH: Waynette Hostetler Jan. 22 – Grace Circle at Bethel Lutheran for Mcrest Feb. 10 – Faith Circle Valentine Luncheon Mar. 20 – Peace Circle at Triumphant Cross for Mcrest Grace Circle will be selling homemade candy in Feb. with profits going to the Organ Fund. ASSOCIATE PASTOR: Pastor Chris She will be officiating at a wedding Feb. 14 Pastor Chris will be out of town on Feb. 1 because she will be participating in an ordination ceremony on Jan. 31. SENIOR PASTOR’S REPORT: Pastor Ulmanis The Lenten Services will be based on Old Testament Readings. He is currently updating the wedding information folders. He will be speaking at the Grosse Pointe Memorial Churches Ecumenical Men’s Breakfast tomorrow morning. The Thurs. morning Bible Study Class will begin Jan. 22. The topic will be the Liturgy and Worship Service. OLD BUSINESS: Marc Simone will be appointing a Vision Committee and would like suggestions for members. NEW BUSINESS: Jim Lieder cleaned and repaired the pop machine in the Fellowship Hall. It was suggested the schedule for Greeters, etc. be listed in the bulletin, one just below the other so that it can be read more easily. After consulting the Synod guidelines, Patty Foster moved, Chris Simone seconded, we grant Renata Conger 8 weeks paid maternity leave. Motion Carried. She has prepared coverage by volunteers during her absence. ADJOURNMENT: Pam Southard moved, Diann Ohman seconded, the meeting be adjourned. Motion carried. Dear Members and Friends of First English, For over ten years our organ technician has warned me that the leather and electronic components of our magnificent pipe organ were beginning to fail. They warned that the organ would become unus-able in the very near term. As many of you know, the Board of Worship and Music requested esti-mates from three reputable firms specializing in organ restoration, and the bids came back earlier this year. After the Board of Worship and Music, the Church Council, and ultimately the congregation voted to proceed with the bid of S.P. Keith & Associates at a cost of nearly $300,000.00, the challenge set before our congregation was, to say the least, significant. On October 19, 2014 we kicked off a campaign during our worship services to raise the necessary funds to restore our organ with a goal of raising the funds (as Pastor Schmidt outlined in his “Be an Organ Donor” sermon that day) by the end of 2014. It is with awe and gratitude that I can report to you that as of January 20, 2015, $301,497 has been raised. There have been many contributors who have made significant monetary sacrifices to contribute to this major goal, and, for that, I am overwhelmingly thankful. I am so proud to be part of a congregation that values the significance of our pipe organ and the role it plays in our worship life. The First English members have proven time and time again that they generously support endeav-ors they feel are important to our congregation. I am excited to know that we will now be able to pro-ceed with the restoration, which will begin shortly this year. With grateful appreciation, Robert Foster, Coordinator of Music

WOMEN’S CIRCLE BIBLE STUDY
The topic of our Women’s Circle Bible studies for this fall is “Transforming Life and Faith.” This study will look at the transforming power of Jesus, the transformations of Paul, Moses, Lydia, Philip and the Ethiopian, plus more. The November study focuses on a portion of the Exodus deliverance story. Through this story we come to understand how God uses signs both to show his power and to strengthen the faith of Moses
and the Israelites. We will also see that for people in the Bible and for Christians today, growth in faith so often takes time. Grace Circle will be studying the book of Nehemiah. All women of First English are encouraged to participate in the learning, service and
fellowship of one our various Circles.

9:30a.m. ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed his “95 Theses” to the church door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg Germany. Historians have assigned this event as the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. Thus in 2017 we will celebrate the 500 Anniversary of the Reformation. Our Presiding Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton, has suggested that, as we look forward to that celebration, we study Luther’s Small Catechism. She points out that “it could be argued that no other experience is more universally Lutheran than studying Luther’s Small Catechism.”
So, our Adult Sunday School Class for this fall will be an overview of Luther’s Small Catechism. Not only will this give us an opportunity to celebrate our Lutheran Heritage, but Luther’s Catechism is also an excellent review of the basics of the Christian Faith!
We have a nice size group on Sunday mornings, but we would love to have YOU join us as well. Our sessions meet during the Sunday School Hour, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. in the Lounge.
This study has had to be postponed until Pastor Krister returns.

In response to comments and questions Pr. Krister will lead a few sessions on worship – what are we doing and why are we doing what we are doing? Everyone is welcome and bring a friend.

COLUMBARIUM FOR FIRST ENGLISH The down payment for our Columbarium has been paid, and Eickhof Columbaria, the company who will be doing the installation, has scheduled to begin working on our Columbarium this coming February.
Church Council at it’s meeting on January 18th decided that the price of the niches up to Easter Sunday, will be $1,500.00; after, they will sell for $1,800.00. The Niches will hold two urns and will be assigned on a “first come-first-served” basis, with members being able to choose the location of their niche within the Columbarium. If you are interested in purchasing a companion niche, please contact the church office.
LENT 2015 BEGINS ASH WEDNESDAY, February 18, 2015 “GOD’S COVENANT WITH GOD’S PEOPLE”
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2015. We have Wednesday Midweek Services during Lent with a morning service at 10:30 a.m. followed by lunch and an evening service at 7:00 p.m. preceded by a Lenten Supper. The theme is God’s Covenant with God’s People as it is expressed in the Old Testament readings. Thank you to all of the groups and individuals who have volunteered to host our Lenten meals. Please join with us, not only for regular worship, but also our meal gatherings as they offer great opportunities for Christian fellowship.

Pantry You’ve heard the expression “back to basics.” This time we’re talking food.
Each month we’ll ask members to donate another “basic” to restock our pantry. February is everything month. We have depleted our stock during the Christmas season. Please consider buying one or two items for our shelves. Obviously if you find a great deal for pantry basics, bring ‘em in. There’s always room for more!
Helping Hands for Homeless
Come join us on Wednesday, February 11 at 6:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall to assemble 400 bag lunches for Central United Methodist’s NOAH project for the homeless. It’s fun – our sandwich prep rivals anything Lucy or Ethel could do (old I Love Lucy reruns for the uninitiated). It’s fast – we’re done in an hour or so. It’s feel-good – you’ll leave knowing 400 homeless people will have a better day tomorrow, enjoying food and fellowship in a safe environment. See you Wednesday night! The Board of Social Action
Lent starts February 18 and Easter is April 5. There is a Sign-up poster to host Lenten Meals. The poster is located on the bulletin board in the hallway. We are planning to offer a Pierogi making class in March - Look for more information to be announced.

Parish Education/Youth News from Renata Sunday School
Children’s Sunday School Offering Please visit http://lwrgifts.org/ to see how the Sunday School will give alms during Lent. By partnering with Lutheran World Relief, children will be able to donate anything from worms for the garden to a dairy cow for the whole village! Parents, please remind your children to bring their offerings to Sunday School each week.
What We’re Learning This Month
Pre- and elementary school are learning about “The Lord’s Prayer” and how Jesus has taught us to pray. Kids, remember to bring your bibles with you every Sun-day! Parents, remember to read through the stories with your children at home and maybe say the Lord’s Prayer together each night!
Middle school is discussing two topics this month: “Conflict” and “Love God Love Others.” Sometimes we don’t see eye-to-eye with those we care about most—parents, friends, and even God—but scripture gives us ways to work through our troubles with love.
Renata’s Maternity Leave
As you may be aware, Dave and Renata have been busily and excitedly preparing for their baby girl to arrive in February. Upon delivery, Renata will begin eight weeks of maternity leave. She and Dave are extremely grateful to Council and the congregation for their support during this new chapter in their lives. They are also very thankful to the Board of Parish Education, Board of Youth Ministry, pastors, staff, and Rachel Boutin (who will lead Thursday night Youth Group) for all the ways they will “fill in” while Renata is away. An Evening of Music Come support local young musicians on Friday, February 6th for “An Evening of Music” in the Luther Center. Doors open at 6:00pm and the concert begins at 7:00pm. Admission is $4 for adults and $10 for families — admission proceeds go to the FEELC Youth scholarship fund! Music-themed art and gifts for sale along with delicious baked goods and snacks provided by the FEELC Youth — food proceeds go to support the 30-Hour Famine! We hope you can join us!
30-Hour Famine Did you know that nearly 9,500 kids are dying every day because of hunger? Want to help make that number shrink? The middle and high school youth will participate in World Vision's 30 Hour Famine, a fasting marathon which raises awareness and funds to combat world hunger. Accepting enrollment for 3 & 4 year olds for September 2015
First English Lutheran Preschool offers an academic program to help prepare your child for kindergarten. With a small class size, our program includes Bible lessons, math, mu-sic, science, art, language, beginning reading concepts and physical development. We have a very large and bright classroom for your child to spend their morning socializing with friends.
February is always an exciting month in Preschool. We have many Valentine's Day projects/activities planned including our classroom party on February 11 when the children exchange valentine cards with each other. Remember those days? We're learning about the life of Jesus
from our children's Bible and continue to work on our letters this month; letter I for "I love you" & ice cream, V for valentines & vegetables, and Z for zebra & zippers. We have parent/teacher conferences the first week of February. Patty Jackson and I will be representing the preschool at the Preschool Library Fair on Wednesday evening, February 4 from 6-8 pm at the Woods branch of the Grosse Pointe Public Library. This event gives us an opportunity to meet prospective families and tell them about our great program. Remember to watch our hallway as we share photos and projects with you!
