CHIANG MAI CURRENT SITUATION

Chaing Mai Municipality in collaboration with German International Cooperation(GIZ) under the project on Integrated Resource Management in Asian Cities : The Urban Nexus

Programs in the field of wastewater management and energy efficiency in the municipal area from 2013 - present

Project & Activities under the GIZ Nexus Program

1. Problem-solving of wastewater in the Mae Kha Canal2. Energy-efficient building design for elderly care center

3. Increasing Capacity of pump performance of fountain at city moat4. Wastewater Collection System in old town and whole-sale fresh market

2. Energy-efficient building design for elderly care center

GIZ in collaboration with the CMM design

an energy efficiency building for elderly care center to reduce energy use and more natural light and sun light

OPTION 1: Improved lighting system OPTION 2 : Improve window glazing tinted glazing

OPTION 2 : Improve window glazing: Double glazing with Low-E coating

OPTION 3: Roof Insulation

OPTION 4 : Additional windows and shading

OPTION 5 : Replace single speed split unites by inverter type split units

OPTION 6 : Photovoltaic OPTION 7 : set operative temperature at 26 ºC in non-active room

3. Improvement Efficiency of Pumps in City Moat

Pumps in the city moat of Chiang Mai, there are the 66 pumps in process water fountain pumps around the city moat surrounding the old city. Known for tourism, the city is keen to have these fountain fully functional at all time.

Pumps are operating 10 hours a day. However, the pumps consume a lot of energy, break down

often, and put stress on both budget and manpower for operation and maintenance

Team staff investigated pumps efficiency at city moat and problems could be found such as heat, fountain’s clogging and pressure

Solving problem of pumping fountain in city moat

Actual situation in Chiang Mai:Combined gravity storm- & waste-water collection system

Storm water drainage lines are used to drain:

• Effluent of the septic tanks

• Grey water (kitchens and bathrooms) > diluting effect

• Storm water (rainwater) > diluting effect > no energy recovery <

4. Wastewater Collection System in old town and whole-sale fresh market

Problems of Muang Mai Market and Around

Alternative waste water collection system: Vacuum sewer collection

Vacuum System: Cost effectives

• Small pipes (80-250mm)• Shallow, narrow trenches (0,6 - 1.2m)• Simple and fast• Simple or even no machinery required

(Energy saving potential)• No manholes, inspection pipes only• No lifting (pump-) stations required• Fresh water and waste water pipes in the same

trench allowed

According to EN it is permitted to install both potable water

pipes as well as vacuum sewer pipes within one single

trench.

According to EN potable water pipes must be installed in a

separate trench and higher level than the gravity sewer

pipes.

Key lessons learn

• integrated management in all dimensions

• Efficient Energy Consumption

• Working in Collaboration with related agencies

• Public participatory process
