Cindy Sherman UnMasked
I first met and photographed Cindy Sherman in Akron, Ohio in the Summer of 1984. Studying her images of herself in various personae before showing up for the shoot, the striking thing I realized was that she was essentially a shy person.Trusting my instincts on this, I showed up with a couple of small masks in whiteand black, as a way for her to maintain her privacy in front of a total stranger. This opened the door to that first encounter, and we made the photographs in an unhurried manner in a couple of hours, just prior to her opening event for a largeexhibition at the Akron Art Institute. We made a number of images that day inthe middle of August in that Orwellian year, in both medium format and 35 mm.
When I was asked by Vanity Fair to photograph Cindy in April of 1987, she already knew who I was, and she generously gave me three days to work withher in the Walker Street studio. Those were the halcyon days of photographicportraiture, where most artist/ subjects knew what a photo shoot involved, andwere willing to give a photographer the time needed to create the visual story.
These portraits are examples of the results of the Akron and the Walker Street shoots, and I feel that an extended portrait of Cindy begins to emerge, thatis a counterpoint to the images that she has made of herself since she began her black and white Film Stills in 1975. In the Akron shoot I was still making only black and white photos, but by the time I got to New York I had also begun to incorporate color film, and strobe lighting. My palette had begun to expand andthere was no better subject, than someone as open and unaffected as the CindySherman I worked with that Spring.
