CHRIST CHRONICLE
From the Principal
Mark von Soosten
Each year when it is time to write the
Chronicle article for August, I work on
something different to say. Since a principal’s
days in July are filled with start of the year prepa-
rations and tasks, it can be repetitive from year to
year. That’s not the case this year!
One very visible change is in our playground. The
machines have been moving dirt around for a
week and they are now starting to prepare to pour
new concrete for the seating area and the basket-
ball court. The sand is gone from the slide and
swings and we are waiting for the arrival of the
new climbing bars so that they can be installed. It
will be so great to not have the dirt patch any-
more! Thanks to everyone that had donated to-
wards this project and also to the people that
have served on the committee to oversee the
changes.
Of course, we have great things going on in the
church as well. The new wood floor looks wonder-
ful. It will be great to see it all unveiled on August
16 at our dedication celebration.
Some of the changes taking place this month are
related to staffing. Patty van Dyck resigned as Pre
-school director, but will be continuing to teach in
the pre-school classroom. She served as director
and taught for 14 years. Kimberly Rasmussen,
our second grade teacher and previous Pre-School
Director, will be assuming those responsibilities.
Joy Arnold has taught at Christ Lutheran for eight
years in a variety of capacities, most recently as
art teacher. She also had previously served as our
fifth grade teacher and filled in with English and
spelling classes. Mrs. Arnold’s position was cut
due to declining enrollment. She will be missed.
Mary Ann Aragon’s full-time school secretary posi-
tion was cut as well. She took on the huge job of
taking over for LuAnn Blea when LuAnn retired
from the school secretary position. Mary Ann did a
great job and she will also be missed. Finally, Mrs.
Kimery Doyle, who taught middle school English
the past two years and all of our physical educa-
tion classes last year, is moving to North Carolina (continued in the next column)

Stephen Ministry…A Caring Ministry
We have a loving congregation. We have a caring
congregation. I see this on almost a daily basis
and it excites me.
I have also seen people hurting in our congrega-
tion. I have seen people suffering in our congrega-
tion. I have seen people in need of support and
love.
A question for me for some time now is how do we
best equip our loving caring congregation to meet
the needs of those in our congregation as they go
through times of suffering, loss, hurt, depression
and conflict. It has been put on my heart that a po-
tential answer may be Stephen Ministry.
(Continued on page 8)
From the Congregation
President Jerry Shroff, Congregation Chairman
(continued from the previous column)
with her family. She will also be missed.
Sometimes life feels like riding a roller coast-
er. The excitement of new things can some-
times be followed by challenges and difficul-
ties. It is easy, but dangerous, to get caught
up in the ups and downs of events. When
that happens to me I try to remind myself that
God is in charge and that His plan is perfect,
even when I don’t know which way He wants
me to go. It is when I try to take over the con-
trols that the crashes can occur. May the Holy
Spirit remind us all that His plan is better than
our plan. We place our trust in Him and pray
for His guidance so that all we do will be to
His glory!
Thank you for your continued support and
prayers for our school!
In Christ,
Mark von Soosten

FROM THE YOUTH DIRECTOR
by Leslie Helge
2016 LCMS National
Youth Gathering
July 16th-20th in
New Orleans, LA
“In Christ Alone”
Held every 3 years, the LCMS Youth Gathering
provides thousands of youth and adults the op-
portunity to come together as a community of
God’s people to learn more about Jesus Christ,
the Christian faith and their Lutheran identity.
During the five days of the Gathering, youth
spend time together in God’s word, worship, ser-
vice and fellowship with others from across the
synod. This event is organized by LCMS Youth
Ministry in Saint Louis, MO.
At the 2016 LCMS Youth Gathering, In
Christ Alone, we will come together around the
book of Philippians and these three sub-
themes: Humility, Identity, and Community.
These sub-themes will form the basis for future
Bible studies and discussion guides to be made
available on the Gathering website and on-site
at the Gathering.
Humility
Scripture focus: Philippians 2:5-11
God humiliates Himself for us in Christ. Christ’s
humility is our humility. This isn’t just a virtue
but our reality. There is joy in living out humility
in Christ alone.
Identity
Scripture focus: Philippians 2:5-11, 1:21-26,
3:8-12
We live as both sinner and saint. This ‘identity
crisis’ is resolved in the blood of Christ. In Christ
we are forgiven and given vocations in which to
live out our identity in service to God and others.
There is joy in our identity in Christ alone.
Community
Scripture focus: Philippians 2:5-11, 1:3-7
There is true community in Christ alone. (Continues on the next column)
“I am the bread of life;
whoever comes to me
shall not hunger, and who-
ever believes in me shall
never thirst…For this is the
will of my Father, that eve-
ryone who looks on the
Son and believes in him
should have eternal life,
and I will raise him up on the last day.” John 6:35,40
One of the key points in VBS this year was “God
has the power to comfort.” When asked during
devotions, “What is your go-to for comfort?” my
answer would have to be food. No surprise,
right? How much better for the body and the
soul, if it would be the “bread that came down
from heaven,” our Jesus!
The first three Sundays in August we read the
Gospel of John, chapter 6, all about the Bread of
Life. Believing in Him, we rejoice in the Sacra-
ment of Holy Communion where we receive for-
giveness of sins with His body and His blood.
Excitement abounds as we await our new chan-
cel area with new configurations as we ap-
proach the altar!
The organ will come back into use on August 16,
if all goes as planned. I have so enjoyed playing
the piano for worship, and so many of you have
expressed your pleasure in it as well. Thank you
for your kind words! To God be the Glory!
NOTES FROM YOUR
MUSIC DIRECTOR
By Beth Shroff
(YOUTH DIRECTOR—Continued from the first column)
Community is diverse and inclusive spanning
across space and time. Community is a place to
receive and practice grace. There is joy in the com-
munity created in Christ alone.
More information will be made available in the
weeks to come.
Peace,
Leslie

Saving Bear’s Life
He was a Native American seat-
ed on the ground and leaning
against our church house
fence.
I just assumed he was drunk
like so many alcholics we deal
with every day. But I checked
on him as we always do. It turns
out he was a diabetic and was
low on blood sugar.
We got him some food then
found out more about him. He
had been walking for 6 miles,
but because he had been hit by
a car in the past, it took him 6
hours to walk it. His name was
Bear.
I drove him to his home and as
always, shared Jesus with him
and prayed for him. If we were-
n't there, he could have passed
out in the hot sun and just been
ignored like another diabetic
was in the area earlier. He
could have died. But we do
more than rescue lives, we res-
cue souls. We share the good
news of Jesus that people
might be saved. Please contin-
ue to pray for God's blessings
on our work.
CARE for the needy! FOOD,
Used clothing, shoes, towels,
blankets, coats, orphaned
socks and gloves, children's
books, plastic grocery bags, and
kitchen items are always appre-
ciated!
Are you a Thrivent member? If
so, you could get together a
food drive or other service pro-
ject for us and Thrivent would
help get you started with $250.
Go to their website at:
https://www.thrivent.com/actio
nteam/ for more info. and con-
tact me for ideas.
Donations are always appreciat-
ed! Funds are used for evange-
lism, job training, rent, food, our
Back To Work program (getting
hygiene necessities to volun-
teers) and for other ministry
needs. Pastor Mark takes no
salary so we can do more. To
donate just make your check
out to Christ Lutheran Church
(our mother church) and put
God Cares About You in the
memo. Tax deductible! Just ask
if you would like a financial re-
port. Thanks for all your help!

CHRIST CHRONICLE Page 8
You will be hearing a lot about Stephen Ministry as
we prayerfully decide if it is a direction we want to
go to equip our congregation to better support one
and another during our journey with Christ.
I know many of you are wondering is Stephen Min-
istry. One best definition that I have found is that it
is a ministry to help the “after” we all experience
from time to time. After…
…after the phone call you hoped you would never
get.
…after the funeral, when everyone has left and the
emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on
you.
…after the doctor says, “I’m sorry but ther is noth-
ing more we can do.
…after the baby arrives, demanding more of you
than you ever dreamed possible.
…after you receive a pink slip with your final pay
check
…after your friends and family have heard your
story one too many times but you still need to talk
it out.
Stephen Ministry equips us to be the “after peo-
ple”. Through intense training, commitment and
prayer it enables members of our congregation to
be able to comfort and support one another as
long as needed.
One question that several people have asked me
is it “Lutheran”. YES! It is a caring Christian minis-
try that is actively engaged in many of our most
successful active Lutheran Churches.
To name a few churches in our Rocky Mountain
District with active Stephen Ministries you just
have to look at some of our largest, most engaged
congregations. Redeemer in Fort Collins, Peace
Arvada, St Johns in Denver, Mount Olive in Aurora,
Our Father in Centennial and Ascension in Little-
ton Colorado are just a few that have active Ste-
phen Ministries.
What I am seeing, what I am being told and what I
believe to be true with Stephen Ministry is that for
it to be successful it takes commitment and Pray-
er. What I know is that our congregation is good
at committing to things and I know we have some
really good “Pray-ers”.
So as we look at Stephen Ministries and decide if
it is a good fit for us is to do just that – Please lift
it up in Prayer. Please commit to learning more
about this ministry as we meet and share. Please
pray to see if it is something that may be on your
heart to be a part of. I believe it can become a vi-
tal part of our ministry. I look forward to learning
more and sharing with you.
God’s Peace,
Jerry

August 2, 2015 – John 6:22-35 “Enduring Food” by Rev.
James L. Elsner, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church~Stroh, IN
Are you hungry? So many things can fill us – for the mo-
ment. There is enduring food that fills us and sustains eter-
nally. That food is the Bread of Life.
August 9, 2015 – John 6:41-51 “One Thing Remains” by
Rev. Dr. Thomas R. Ahlersmeyer, Holy Cross Lutheran
Church, Fort Wayne, IN So much of what occupies our
thoughts and activities is so, so temporary. When things
such as house, car, job, appetite and, yes, even family are
willingly or unwillingly surrendered by us, ONE THING RE-
MAINS. Jesus is the “Bread of Life” who exchanges His life
for “the life of the world.”
August 16, 2015 – John 6:66-69 “The Words of Eternal
Life” by Rev. Dr. Walter A. Maier III, Concordia Theological
Seminary~Fort Wayne, IN The words of Christ – the Gospel
– are the words of eternal life. These are the most im-
portant words that we can hear and read. These words con-
vey, convert, and comfort, and result in our having tremen-
dous blessings – now, and forever.
August 23, 2015 – Mark 7:1-13 “Tradition and Doctrine” by
Rev. Dr. Daniel J. Brege, St. Paul Lutheran Church~Decatur,
IN God has given us His Word, the Word which centers in
Christ Jesus our Savior. God's people have developed and
handed down traditions. These can be good if they magnify
God's Word. If they replace God's Word, the Word centering
in Christ, they are evil. May we both magnify God's Word
and use traditions that support and enhance that Word.
August 30, 2015 – Ephesians 6:10-20 “Dressed
Appropriately” by Rev. Paul E. Shoemaker, Emanuel Luther-
an Church~New Haven, IN We are engaged in a real fight at
close quarters against spiritual forces of wickedness.
Against such enemies, it is necessary to put on the whole
armor of God so that we will be able to stand firm in the day
of fierce temptations and attacks, whenever that day may
come.

CHRIST CHRONICLE Page 13
Welcome back to our monthly Honor Circle meet-
ings. In August, we will meet at Le Peep on Louisi-
ana and Indian School on Wednesday, the
19th. We have our favorite round table in the
back. Come a little before 12 noon.
And this is a new invitation to
all ladies and their friends,
who are 55 and older, to join
us for good fellowship. We al-
ways have a good time talking.
Call Eunice at 889-9705 or
Marcia at 271-1287 if you have
questions or need a ride.
And don't forget to purchase a SCRIP (gift) card
for Le Peep.
HONOR
CIRCLE
We will not meet in August, but have some great
plans for Sept., Oct. and Nov.
Of course, if you have
ideas, please contact
Lee Swanger (294-
6752) and Eunice
Hoeft (889-9705)
DO YOU GET OUR Mobile-Friendly
WEEKLY Bulletin ANNOUNCEMENTS?
Check out the new mobile-
friendly format to the weekly
bulletin announcements sent
out by email.
If you haven't received that
email, and would like to, there
are several ways to get on the list:
send an email to the church office
(clcs@clc-s.org);
call and leave a message stating your email
address (884-3876, ext. 120);
go to the church website (www.clc-s.org) and
click on the round blue button on the right side
to sign up for email notices.
Women’s Lunch
ALL women are invited to a luncheon in the parish hall on Sunday, Aug. 23 starting after the second service ends
- approximately 12:15 p.m.
The Christ Lutheran Women’s Guild will be hosting this luncheon.
Some of the ladies who attended the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League Convention in Des Moines, Iowa in June will share a few brief expe-riences and memories. The women’s guild will also hold their annual elections during this meet-ing, but the main focus will be to gather with oth-er women for a time of faith, food, friends, fel-lowship, and fun! (Nothing to bring or do - just come.)
All ladies, PLEASE feel welcome.
If you have any questions, contact Eunice Hoeft, 889-9705.
