Diamond In the Rough Barrel Racing Promotions (DITR) was founded on June 12th in 2012 with a superb vision of the ultimate dream – helping to promote Barrel Racing to become a massive event here in Australia. It is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the sport of barrel racing and pole bending for contestants of all ages and all levels of competition. The group intends to provide anyone with a love for the sport of Barrel Racing an opportunity to begin somewhere, improve their riding skills, develop a spirit of fair competition and appreciate good horsemanship. The promoters’ vision into the future is to boost the growth of Barrel Racing in Australia to a more elite level by providing competition with major
sponsors, higher prize pools, broader spectator numbers with National and International recognition provided to all of those involved.
Participants from the local area and as far Biloela, Warwick, Roma and Toowoomba came to compete at the Chinchilla Showgrounds the weekend 15-16th February 2014. Looking as if they stepped straight out of a country clothing catalogue, the sharply dressed Ladies displayed the perfect unison between the rider and horse that makes any equestrian competition a pleasure to watch.

Ladies Cocktail Night to Raise Money for Good Cause
Australian farmers are some of the most productive in the world in some of the toughest and most arid environment. The recent combination of Live Export bans, fire, no wet season and now a harsh drought are pushing many over the edge. This is not just a financial issue; it is a health issue as well. They need our help.
More than 65 glamorous ladies attended the evening with a mission to raise money for our Aussie farmers. A total amount of $4138.75 was raised and $715 of that was raised from the raffle alone. Huge thanks to the local businesses that provided the event with some fantastic raffle prizes. Amazing cocktail food was donated by PFD Miles and Chinchilla RSL generously donated the champagne. Jamaica Blue provided the venue free of charge and all the staff at Jamaica Blue kindly donated their time.
Events like these don’t just happen; they need input and support from many people to be a success. This was an enormous contribution of time and resources, and the night simply would not have been as big a success without the businesses’ donations, helpers and all the ladies who attended but mainly of Tash and Nicki’s willingness and enthusiasm!

From the Editor
It’s hard to believe March is here already, it feels as though the year has just begun, yet here we are almost at Easter again! With March of course comes the change of season, and the start of Autumn and hopefully some cooler weather, maybe even some rain if we’re lucky!
This month we have a wonderful story from one of our new contributors, Chantahl Stedman, who has written a story on the very talented photographer, Scott Bridle. You will see some of his amazing photographs and read all about his story on pages 12 - 13 of this edition.
There are some exciting events coming up in the region; The Wandoan Race Day as well as the Flinton Races which you can read all about in this edition. Keep an eye out in next month’s edition for all the photos from these wonderful events!
Enjoy your first Autumn Edition of the Chinchilla Vine Magazine for 2014.

National Youth Week National Youth Week is the largest celebration of young people in Australia. It has been held as a national event since 2000 and its success is a result of the hard work and dedication of the young people aged 12-25, that are involved in organising these events at a local level, across all states and territories.
The theme for National Youth Week 2014 is ‘Our Voice. Our Impact.’ It encourages young people to voice their opinions, share ideas, show off their skills and talents whilst participating positively in the future. The theme was chosen by the Young Members of the National Planning Group, following broad consultation with youth from across Australia.
And what a positive and inspirational occasion! This year’s theme and a variety of free activities had been organised around the young peoples feedback from last year’s celebrations. Pool parties, GIANT pool inflatables and board games were all happening from Monday 17 to Saturday 22 February 2014 across the region, with one being held in Chinchilla on Friday 21st.
The pool party though is just one component of this year's Western Downs Youth Week celebrations that follow the theme. Young people across the region were filmed giving their thoughts on 'Our Voice. Our Impact.' and these videos were played on a large outdoor screen during the event while a local community group hosted a fundraising BBQ. Many youngsters attended this engaging, entertaining and mostly wet fun.

Aussie Helpers’ Charity GalaBrian and Nerida Egan established Aussie Helpers on 21 May 2002 to help fight poverty and lift the spirits of those severely affected by drought in the outback.
From what they saw around them and what they heard from people in the bush, Brian and Nerida felt that no organisation was doing anything significant to help families suffering the full effects of the worst drought in living history. Brian, as a veteran of the Indonesian Confrontation and the Vietnam War in the 1960s who lost his own farm in the 1990s from a combination of drought and personal depression, is no stranger to hard times.
Aussie Helpers have some 40 volunteers and mainly work via the ever faithful “Bush Telegraph” to find farming families who are in desperate need of assistance.
Aussie Helpers work around three words “care, share, respect” which simply means that Aussie Helpers care about people in need and will share whatever assistance they have available free of charge and will give the recipients the utmost respect and confidentiality.
Aussie Helpers raises all its own funding and is not aligned to any other charity or religious association.
Unlike government funded organisations, Aussie Helpers are all unpaid volunteers making a real difference to the lives of real people.

‘My Obsession’ – Maree Cameron’s 22nd Solo Exhibition! What is an obsession? For the Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery April exhibition, well known Western Downs artist Maree Cameron, explores what it means to her. The dictionary tell us an obsession can be ‘something that a person thinks about constantly or frequently’ or ‘an activity that someone is very interested in or spends a lot of time doing’. Both of these fit very well to Maree and her art.
Maree has lived all her life in rural western Queensland, settling in Jandowae in 1989. She began her obsession with art in 1976 as a self-taught artist, gradually over the years gaining skills and knowledge through the Flying Arts School, artist-run courses and Summer Schools. Along her journey she has collected many accolades and awards, including a Minister for the Arts Encouragement Award, and an Arts Queensland Award. She has been active in local agricultural shows both as an artist and as a judge, as well as a tutor for many rural artists. Her expertise has been recognised internationally with the recent purchase by the Toowoomba Regional Council of her work ‘Spring Time in Queen’s Park’. This was presented to the Mayor of Paji, Toowoomba’s sister city, in South Korea.
As a part of her 22nd solo exhibition Maree will be unveiling her latest source of nourishment for her obsession – the colours and textures of New Zealand. As she explains: ‘Early in this year (2013) I had my first overseas trip to New Zealand. This really opened a Pandora’s Box to another lifestyle. For 10 days I saw lots of subject matter and what my eyes observed are in some
of the new works on display.’ Along with her New Zealand experience, visitors to the Gallery will be able to see other examples of Maree’s talents through her use of an eclectic range of painting styles.
Maree’s motto is ‘What you put in - is what you get out’. This Maree certainly does do! She invites you to come and share her ‘obsession’.
‘My Obsession’ will be open at the Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery from Saturday 29 March to Wednesday 30 April. There will be a special preview at 10am on Saturday 29 March 2014.
Reminder to all local artists and craftworkers!
Don’t forget the Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery May exhibition ‘Back to Black’. This is your chance to shine, and to experience your own little piece of the excitement of exhibiting at an Art Gallery.
‘Back to Black’ is a return to showcasing local talents in the arts and crafts. Come into the Gallery or email us on whitegums101@bigpond.com for the information brochure. Exhibition forms for artists and craftworkers are now available at the Gallery. There is a maximum of two pieces per exhibitor. The only visual requirement is that your artwork or craft piece have at least 25% black or a derivative of black in it. The rest of the colour is your choice. Don’t miss out on this free opportunity!
12x12 Challenge
What a great success! We have had over 120 entries from local schools, organisations, artists and community members. The images in their CD cases will be on sale for $12 each until the end of March. All proceeds are going to local charities. Well worth a visit!
Volunteer Training Workshop
The Gallery has RADF funding for a Volunteer Training Workshop in contemporary Regional Art Gallery practices. The two day workshop is facilitated by the Flying Arts and will cover front of desk and back office practices necessary to run an Art Gallery or exhibition. The cost to participants will be $30 for the two days (includes catering). The workshop will be held on Saturday 5 April and Sunday 6 April. For bookings or further details please contact Helen on 46689908 or 46627514 (A/H).

Flinton Races 2014It’s on again! The Annual Flinton Races, to be held Easter Saturday, 19 April, 2014, has grown from strength to strength each year. This year’s race meeting will be no different with a full five race program and $42,000 in prize money up for grabs. The usual bookies’ ring will be in operation where happy punters can bet on the local and interstate races while following the action on the big screens.
Gates open at 11.30am and the day kicks off at noon with a complimentary finger food luncheon courtesy of the Committee. The St George Lions Club will be out in force providing bar and BBQ all day. The Lions Club will also be on deck Sunday morning to provide breakfast for those camping. Please remember to bring your cash as there are no Eftpos facilities available on the banks of the Moonie River!
Guests are able to book a table under the shade of the bough shed; $25 secures you and your guests a table for eight and a bottle of champagne. Please email Cindy Coggan to book - pccoggan@bordernet.com.au. Families are well catered for and the kids will be entertained all day on the free jumping castle. The evening kicks off with an amazing fireworks display and then rolls into the night with a live band and DJ.
The Flinton Race Club Committee has been hard at work all year on a new shower and toilet block. Free camping is available next to the race course.
Ladies and gents, make sure you dress to impress as Fashions on the Field will once again take place. Last year’s entries saw a bevy of gorgeous fillies and many handsome lads battle it out for top fashion honours.
For those who are fleet of foot and fit, be ready to contest the Flinton Dash Footrace to be held on the track following the last race. There is $1,000 cash up for grabs and the glory of being written into the Flinton History Books.
To get to Flinton, simply head west on the Moonie Highway; the Flinton turn off is 12km past Westmar on the right hand side. From St George, the turn off is 110km on the left.

They say they breed them tough in the bush but really I think we breed them brilliant…well that’s the case when you mention the name Scott Bridle. Scott is a born and bred Glenmorgan boy raised at Erambie. His appreciation for nature and the bush was implanted into him from day one by his mother and father as they taught him about the magnificence and splendour that the bush had to offer. With his mother as an artist there is no doubt that Scott “grew up immersed in art” and before long his mother gave him another artistic medium to turn his hand at, photography. Leaving home at age 20 set for the stations up north with camera in hand, Scott embarked on a journey of majestic beauty and admiration. He spent 15 years as a stockman snapping away before graduating to the skies as a pilot. This different angle opened the doorway for Scott in to a new world of photographic opportunities. He spent 10 years in the air before returning to the district with ample images that left the masses in awe. Scott delighted in seeing the pleasant expressions as people looked on through his photos which lead him to compiling his recent book “Outback”. From here Scott decided to try his hand at a bit of healthy competition by entering the BHP Billiton Cannington Waltzing Matilda Photographic Competition. He began his success in this area taking out first place in the Colour Print section in 2010 and more recently again in 2013 with his image (pictured) Jordan’s Woolshed Brenda.
Scott continues his passion for photography right here in the Western Downs and is now based in Meandarra with his newly established helicopter business specialising in contract mustering, feral animal control and aerial photography. With his love for the bush, Scott has also developed a special talent for the odd portrait or two. He is currently building his photographic portfolio in order to release another book and plans to do a
few more trips out west before its completion. Scott’s current book “Outback” can be found at all leading book stores or on his website www.scottbridle.com; for bookings and enquiries please contact Scott on 0429 674 114 or Fairway Studios, Goondiwindi. For those that are interested in photography or would even like to just give it a go, Scott will be judging the Photography section at the Tara Show on the 8th March. And just to be sure he never misses an opportunity, Scott “always has his camera with him” no matter where his travels may lead.

Ambulance Open Day – Centenary of Service Dalby Community The Queensland Ambulance Service Dalby has proudly serviced the town’s community and surrounding rural areas for one hundred years.
Dalby’s Local Ambulance Committee chose to celebrate their special occasion on Saturday, 25th January, 2014 between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm at the Dalby Ambulance Station, 154/156 Cunningham Street, Dalby.
The Committee invited Acting Assistant Commissioner, Mr Glen Maule, to open the event, and Mayor Mr Ray Brown to be guest speaker on the day. The Local Ambulance Committee and staff were on hand to welcome all who attended and to answer any questions.
Mr Chris Hanna from Queensland Wildlife Conservation Service undertook wildlife safety talks. I was looking for Snake Safety Awareness information and appropriate actions to be considered by members of the community when they are confronted.
Chris used a PowerPoint display and spoke to open groups, with active interactions with the
community members on the day. Chris also included colouring in options for the children. We were able to display many different types of old and new equipment (including vehicles/stretchers etc).
We estimated that over 100 persons attended. I thank all who assisted on the day very much; their efforts made the day a success.

Gardening Tips for MarchAfter the heat and humidity that we have been having, your roses may be starting to look a bit out of shape. It is a good idea to prune any stray branches and fertilise them with sudden impact for roses to keep them going.
Petunias, alyssum and lobelia can be planted now to get a good autumn show. It is also a good time to start preparing garden beds for winter planting, by mixing the soil with a slow release fertiliser and gypsum. Winter flowering plants include pansies, sweet peas, foxgloves and larkspur, just to name a few.
If you have a vegetable garden, then towards the end of March is the ideal time to prepare a section of the garden so it is ready for your winter vegetables, such as cauliflower, broccoli, onions, peas, cabbage etc.
Don’t forget to visit Dalby Landscapes Facebook page or drop in and see our friendly staff at 15 Hospital Road, if you would like any further gardening advice.

CompetitionsThe PHANTOM of the OPERAFar beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, the Phantom lives his shadowy existence. Shamed by his grotesque physical appearance he lurks in the misty catacombs beneath the Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over its occupants, but the love he holds for his beautiful protégée, innocent soprano Christine is too strong even for her heart to resist.
The 2014 Empire Theatres major production, The Phantom of the Opera, presented by Heritage Bank, is a timeless story of seduction, despair and obsession as The Phantom’s fixation on Christine unleashes a tale of drama, destruction and death.
Don’t miss your chance to enjoy Andrew Lloyd Webber’s international award winning musical, as this unique theatrical experience, featuring the haunting score including Think of Me, Angel of Music, Music of the Night, All I Ask of You, Masquerade and The Phantom of the Opera is brought to life on the Empire Theatre stage from April 3-13.

Visit the Bunya MountainsBunya Nuts are falling and there are an awful lot of them this year. The trees are loaded and bunya cones are littering the ground. Driving is interesting at present – dodging bunya cones. Some cones are huge, weighing up to 10kg, with the majority around 6 – 8kg. Bunya cones mostly fall at night but the crashing sound of branches being broken and the thud as the cone hits the ground echoes around the mountain even during the day.

2014 School Leaders Chinchilla State High School held its Leadership Induction and Badge Presentation Ceremony during a whole school assembly on Tuesday 11 February. This provided an opportunity to introduce and acknowledge the student leadership group for 2014, comprising School Captains, Vice Captains, House Captains, Committee Chairpersons and Form Captains. Proud parents and family members also attended the ceremony.
In his address, Principal, Mr Scott Rowan spoke about the definition of leadership and challenged this year’s school leaders with the following words, “High-quality leadership requires responsibility and we trust that these young leaders will represent their leadership roles and the people who have elected them with pride, honour and integrity.
The school community is confident that the school will be in highly capable hands and looks forward with anticipation to the opportunity that the school leaders will have during 2014 to make a positive contribution to the culture and future of the school.
Congratulations to all students on their appointments.

Chinchilla State High SchoolKokoda Challenge
2014 has started with groans and sore muscles for Chinchilla State High School’s Kokoda Challengers, as they start their preparation for a 30km trek in May.
At this stage, there are approximately 20 teams of dedicated students and teachers signed up and registered for the Toowoomba challenge. They have been lucky enough to procure the generous services of Healthy U personal trainer, Amanda Bell, who has designed a rigorous training program to prepare them for the challenges that a 30km hike up and down the Toowoomba range will present.
Lunchtime training sessions are being held as well as morning fitness sessions. It has been great to see the number of students regularly attending these sessions and motivating their team members through the many squats, burpees and mountain climbers required! In a month’s time the students and teachers will begin training with backpacks!

We know the days can be long and a farmer’s work is never done.

Walking In Your Shoes There’s an old saying "You can't really know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes”. Last month members of the BMO Team hit the road to get a better sense of just what it’s like to be in the shoes of farmers and business owners across our region.
The stories aren’t new to us. Most of the BMO Partners have grown up on farms and even still work on them, we’ve helped in our families’ businesses, we’ve invested and we’ve borrowed. We’ve been young and carefree, we’ve studied, and we’ve travelled. We’ve had health crises. We’ve lost loved ones. We’ve had families. We get what it’s like to try and put a child through school while praying for the rains to come. And we’ve had good times too, like winning a big contract or having a good day on the golf course. BMO has worked with clients across a range of industries for more than 24 years.
Importantly though, even though we’ve had similar experiences to our clients, we know that we will never assume at the outset what it’s like to be them. To do that, we have to walk alongside them and listen. It’s part of our team values at BMO
– our value of “understanding” is about respect and good manners, being open and honest, and committed to listening.
It goes right back to ancient Greece. Plato once said: “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle”. That is why we’ve launched a new campaign called “We’re with you every step of the way”. It means more than just walking beside our clients and advising them, it’s about being “with them”; providing a service that’s not dictatorial – but more like a partnership.
During February, we were out on the road travelling to Taroom, Miles, Condamine, Dirranbandi, Moonie and back to Dalby visiting clients and presenting our “The Farmer Wants a Life” seminars. One thing that really struck us was that no matter how bad the conditions were out in these communities, everywhere we went we were taken aback by the positive spirit of our farming communities. In amongst the desperate need for rain, there were signs of progress and excitement. More than 150 guests came along to the sessions to talk with us about succession planning, business
structures, tax tips, government incentives, aged care, employing people, communication and about being aware of the signs of and effects of stress.
We know all too well the many challenges all of our local small businesses are facing – not just farmers but service industry, manufacturing, transport and retail. We know that everyone’s wearing a different pair of shoes… Sometimes the path is smooth and sometimes it’s bumpy. Some are skipping through while others are dragging their feet. But no matter where you are at in life, or in business, we’re with you every step of the way.

The Queensland Curtis LNG Project will be the world’s first project to turn natural gas from coal seams into liquefied natural gas, or LNG.
The project, which has been under construction since 2010, will provide cleaner energy for export markets from 2014.
This major integrated project involves:
• expansion of QGC’s natural gas production in the Surat Basin of southern Queensland;
• 5 4 0 km, 1m- diame ter pipeline network from the gas fields to Curtis Island, off Gladstone; and• an LNG plant on Curtis Island.
As construction advances, QGC is commissioning key components of the project.
The QCLNG pipeline team
celebrated ano ther key milestone on 16 December 2013 with first gas piped from the Surat Basin gas fields to the LNG plant at Curtis Island.
Arrival of first gas on to the island enables commissioning to begin on the first of two LNG production units, known as trains, being developed as part of the project.
Construction of the LNG plant and other key facilities is well under way.
QCLNG projects are gathering momentum in the most s ou ther l y o f our thre e development areas, near Dalby, which is critical to production of first LNG. Three of the six field compression stations being constructed in this area are being commissioned.
The projec t remains on schedule for first LNG in 2014.

Community Fund provides another A$550,000 to local projects
QGC has provided a further A$550,000 to 19 community projects through the latest round of its Sustainable Communities Fund. Funding granted in the sixth round includes about A$305,000 to 12 groups in the Western Downs and about A$245,000 to seven groups in Gladstone.
QGC Vice President Sustainability Brett Smith said the donations supported communities across southern Queensland.
“By lending a hand to hard-working community groups, in addition to longer-term projects in health, housing, employment and training, we are helping to mitigate the impact of our Queensland Curtis LNG Project,” Brett said.
T h e Q G C S u s t a i n a b l e Communities Fund has provided A$4.6 million to 145 short-term, one-off projects since it began in 2011.

This means we have hired more than 15 people every day during the past year. QGC’s investment in construction, exploration and operations since January 2010 has now topped A$19.4 billion.
We invested about A$16.3 billion – or 84% – with Australian firms.
About A$13.2 billion, or 68% of
the total, went to Queensland companies.
QGC Managing Director Derek Fisher said more than 118,800 Australian companies had registered interest in doing business with QGC since 2010.
“A snapshot of current contrac ts shows we are investing nearly A$920 million in Gladstone and about A$915 million in the Western Downs region,” Derek said.

Bringing sexy back!Kiss N’ Makeup Beauty Boutique is a stylish, modern and hotly anticipated beauty salon opening in Chinchilla.
I discovered there was a gap between salons that focused on cheap prices without the service and luxury offerings that are a bit snooty and uncomfortable. I want the ladies and gents of Chinchilla and district to go away feeling sexy not have to travel away to feel stylish and sexy. I aim to deliver great service in an atmosphere that feels special and five-star but at reasonable prices. “I bring a total beauty offering together for our clients,” says owner Angela Gordon whose experience across the industry specializing and working with Napoleon products for almost 5 years.
The service menu is designed around treatments Angela herself likes, treatments she says makes you feel stylish and sexy before a big night out or a trip away to the city. Expect waxing, manicures, pedicures, brow work, makeup and upstyling with brands including Napoleon, Lycon, Gelish, Hello Darling and seasonal facials which is guaranteed to strike the perfect chord
for Chinchilla’s ladies.
The design of Kiss N’ Makeup Beauty Boutique is stylish, and modern with it’s eye catching chic black and white theme, communal nail table, to accommodate small groups (simply add champagne) to its makeup bar for special events and VIP nights are sure to be something special. On your way to the luxurious Treatment room, browse some of the clothing labels which include, Lee Jeans, Mackenzie Mode, Elliatt, honey and beau. We haven’t forgot the men, stocking Lee men’s range also.
I’m a mother of 5 beautiful children, so anyone that chooses to have a family and a career at the same time has to accept a certain amount of chaos. When I’m asked how I juggle work and family life. After I eventually stop laughing, as all working mothers know balance is a comical concept. It’s all about just going a lit bit easier on ourselves.
Kiss n’ Makeup Beauty Boutique’s aim is to encourage, everyone who walks through it’s door has an experience that takes you away from
your own personal brand of chaos and time to give yourself a break.

The Need for Sleep….In last month’s magazine edition you may have learnt a thing or two about sugar and hopefully you have started on your journey of change. This month we are going to focus on another topic that can vastly affect your health and that is sleep. Firstly, lets test how well your are sleeping with a simple questionnaire: For more than two weeks have you…
Had trouble getting to sleep?Been sleeping for fewer hours than usual?Had poor quality of sleep?Been tossing and turning at night?Been waking up regularly during the night?Been feeling sleepy most of the day?
Well if you answered yes to any of these then you are not alone. About 15% of Australians are estimated to suffer regular sleep difficulties and another 20% claim to suffer occasional problems sleeping. However, having a good night sleep is important for maintaining good health. The body uses sleep to recharge from the day’s activities. In addition to this we need quality sleep which is not necessarily a long sleep. Lack of sleep or quality sleep can lead to irritability, lack of energy, poor concentration, fatigue, dizziness,
slow reaction time, aches and pains, reduced immune function, decreased general well-being, hallucinations and increased risk of mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Some common sleep problems and disorders include insomnia, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, sleep apnoea and excessive daytime.
Some tips to improve your sleep:
IN THE MORNING
• Get out of bed as soon as you wake. Don’t go back to sleep.
• Get up at the same time each morning.• Go outside into the fresh air• Do some form of physical activity, like going
for a walk
DURING THE DAY
• Do not take naps.• If you are worrying about some problems
then make time to address them so that your mind is free of worry and thoughts at night.
• Monitor your sleep hours and awake hours by using a diary.
• Avoid drinking caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea or energy drinks and at worst avoid consuming any caffeine after 4pm.
• Exercise
AT NIGHT
• Try to go to be at the same time each night.• Use low light when getting ready for bed; this
signals the brain to wind down.• Try to keep all electrical items out of your
bedroom. Some studies have shown that electricity can interfere with brain activity during sleep.
• If you have trouble getting to sleep then do a low energy and low stimulation activity before going to be such as reading, sewing. Avoid mobile phones or TV they cause to much stimulation.
• Also listening to relaxing music can help clear your mind.
• Ensure your bedroom is quiet, comfortable and dark.

Question: Should I be using generic over the counter reading glasses? New research has revealed that over the counter reading glasses with identical magnification in each eye may put old people at risk of a fall and impact on quality of life and even life expectancy.
The main reason for this is that as we get older
there is a greater prevalence of anisometropia (difference between the two eyes). This condition is ten times more likely in people over 75 years old compared to children.
Generic over the counter reading glasses don’t
account for these differences. Appropriate correction of both eyes is especially important as we get older and less stable on our feet.

DehydrationWhat is Dehydration? How does dehydration occur?
Dehydration is the loss of body fluids e.g. urine, vomit, diarrhoea and sweat.
How do we stay hydrated?
Regular intake of water and electrolytes from foods.
Approximately 60% of our body weight is fluid
Our body requires the correct balance of water and electrolytes
Electrolytes are mineral salts which derive from our foods (Sodium, Potassium and Chloride)
The primary function of sodium and chloride is to retain our fluid and potassium to assist with our nerve and muscle function
Every day we lose water and electrolytes from our body (via urine, sweat, breath, bodily secretions)
When we are well this process is controlled so the balance is maintained.
When we are not well (vomiting, diarrhoea, heavy sweating, not eating) this process is not easy to control and a state of dehydration may occur.
Causes of Dehydration
Vomiting and diarrhoea (loss of body fluids and reduced intake of food and fluids)
Vigorous exercise (loss of sweat)
Travelling (travelling diarrhoea/ long haul flights/ climatic changes)
Hot conditions (loss of sweat)
Working in hot conditions (loss of sweat)
Excessive alcohol (diuretic effect)
Signs of Dehydration
Warning signs of mild to moderate dehydration:
Decreased urine output (or darker in colour than usual)
Lethargy
Headache
Dry mouth
Loss of skin elasticity (white marks will appear if pinched)
Sunken eyes
Rapid body weight loss of 2% to 7%
Medical Advice
Seek medical advice if diarrhoea persists for more than:
6 hours for infants under 6 months
12 hours for children under 3 years
24 hours for children aged between 3 and 6 years
48 hours for adults and children over 6 years.
