Play is serious stuffFrom waking up as a kangaroo, to going to bed as a racing car driver, play
is a child’s full-time job. And it’s a job to be taken seriously. Because it’s not
just fun and games – but the basis for how children learn, develop and
become who they are. And that fact underpins all the work we do here at
Children’s IKEA, and is the reason why we believe that home is the most
important playground.
When creating our products, we always start by speaking with leading
children’s experts. They teach us about things like safety, and how different
kinds of play stimulate different areas of child development. Then we turn
to the real specialists – children themselves, asking them to play with our
products as we watch, listen and learn. And by seeing the world through
their eyes, we can create the kind of playmates that children love,
and learn from. To discover more about play and child development,

A secret tunnel will take a child to places
they’ve never been before, and is a great help
to them in training their gross motor skills.

Unlimited playKids see the world differently from us adults. We see a wooden block,
they see an airoplane, or a robot, or any number of imagined things.
And it’s because of this that we think it’s important to keep our toys
as basic as possible. Because when so much fun comes purely from
your own imagination, why would you want to complicate life?
MÅLA easel
£14.99
More interestingthan watching paint dry...Art for art's sake? No way! When children draw and paint,
they actually enhance their fine motor skills and practice hand-
eye coordination. By encouraging them to express themselves
freely, you'll let them exercise imagination, and find ways to
express their personality. Art is a human instinct. With the right
equipment, it’s easy to encourage what exists naturally, and to
help your children discover things about themselves, and the
world around them. To learn more about play and child
development, visit IKEA.co.uk/playground

IKEA PS LÖMSK swivel armchair
£45Plastic and polyester. Designer: Monika Mulder. 59×62, H75cm. Blue/white. 401.002.53
As with all our children’s products, IKEA PS LÖMSK is made with rounded corners, no protruding parts, and plastic that bends rather than cracks.
We’ve designed the latch for the pull-down hood so that it’s safe for little fingers.
An extra wide and weighted foot makes the IKEA PS LÖMSK topple-proof. (If you’re not allowed to spin at full speed, then what’s the point?)
Tailor-made for tough loveWho thinks about safety when they're having fun? Not kids, that's for sure! They’re too
busy enjoying themselves. But that's ok, because we make child safety our top priority.
We believe it’s our responsibility to see the hidden dangers, so we follow the strictest
international laws and have zero tolerance for any safety risks in our products.
Because children should be free just to play.

Playing is learning for lifeDid you know that much of what makes us who we are
happens between the ages of 0 and 7? That’s really something
to think about, and it's the reason we believe that play is the
most important activity of all. Here are a few examples of how
children develop through play.
Right on track
Playing with a train set is a great way for kids to
develop their fine motor skills, and engine sound
effects... But it actually also encourages logical
thinking, which later in life is the basic skill for
understanding mathematics.
LILLABO 20-piece basic set train £6.99
Builds different tracks. Total track length 300cm. Recommended
for age 3 and upwards. Solid beech. Multicolour. 300.643.59
A heap big chief objective
It's essential for kids to be able to immerse
themselves in their own imagination. A play tent
is the perfect place to do just that. To take time
out, and have a little pow-wow with themselves.
KOJA tent £6.99 100% polyethylene. 120×120, H95cm.
White/light blue. 200.724.54
Productive down time
Rockers exercise joints
and muscles in children's
arms and legs. They're
also great for clearing
the mind and recharging
your batteries. Maybe
we should make them
for adults!

Great buddies deserve good homes
Life can be frustrating sometimes. Your best buddy does
a disappearing act right before bedtime, or your favourite paintbrush
is nowhere to be seen. It’s probably not their number one priority,
but children do actually appreciate a bit of order. After all,
it creates more space to play in, and it means they can find stuff.
With features like transparent plastic for good overview
and wheels for easy transport, our children’s storage helps kids
keep track of all their favourite playmates.

With no time to waste, the vets
jump into their “animal
ambulance” and head for the
scene of the emergency...
Suddenly, a car
swerves out of
control ...
... meanwhile at the
vets' office, it’s all
business as usual...
... until an
urgent call
comes in,
reporting an
incident!
... where our
heroes swiftly
help the
victim back
to perfect
health.
Everyone needs a place to call their own, especially kids. A place that
feels cosy and safe, where they can surround themselves with their
favourite things. Somewhere to read or do a nice drawing for mum and
dad... or just lie still and dream up a whole lifetime's great adventures.

Meet Anna Efverlund, IKEA designer
“I return to my childhood all the time. One of my
favourite memories is of visiting my grandmother,
where I would play with her colourful buttons for
hours and hours. It’s a good example of how
children play, how simple buttons can inhabit
a magical world of their own. The joy I felt over those buttons as
a child is a great source of inspiration in my work today as a
grown-up. Because to do a good job as a designer for Children’s
IKEA, you need to think differently – these products need to be
more than just fun – they should also be functional, affordable and
most of all, safe.
And since a childish mind does a good job of challenging
conventions, I guess it’s fair to say it’s my job never to grow up.”
