to Food Prepared by Boardof Officers.

gency rations, returned here to-day, aftera week's march in the Wichita and CaddoIndian reservations with a command of

twenty-five men (fr^m Troop A, Fort Reno,and twenty-live from Troop C, Fort Sill,all of the Eighth Cavalry.This was the Board's fourth and anal

test in Oklahoma, the experiment havingbeen in progress for more than a month,under the direction of Captain 3. W.¡Fountain, Eighth Cavalry, and Captain F.W? Foster, Fifth Cavalry, who will go at

once to Washington to submit their tindingto the War Department.The officers are not permitted to ex¬

press opinions in advance eli their official

report, but enough is known from obser¬vations in the field to warrant Che state¬

ment that the Board wili recommend thatits own ration be adopted.The War Department asked for a ration

occupying the least possible 'amount ofspace, and that would keep soldiers sent

into a hostile country, remote from theirbase of supplies, in good health andstrength for from three to five days.With the Board's own ration the men

did not lose in weight, their health was

good, and the food was more palatable atthe end of five days than on the first day.

I This ration having' given most satisfac¬tion, it was decided to use it in a final andrigid test.To make the conditions as severe as

possible the men were taken into an un¬

inhabited Indian reservation, where theywere unable to get any food, and madeto observe the same discipline as troopsin actual warfare. They rode an averageof twenty miles a day in a broken coun¬

try, in a crisp, invigorating atmosphereand after going into camp many of themtramped for hours, hunting game, beforethey were .permitted to ea^Not one of the fifty men became ill.

Practically all maintained their weightand strength.The Board's ration weighs one pound,

and will sustain a man twenty-tour hours.

The food is virtually raw, lean beef and a

pound of good bread. The beef is desic¬cated to a weight of four ounces amipounded into a fine powder. Wich the beefis mixed eight ounces of -wheat that is

first boikled. the husk removed, and then

parched and ground into a course flour.

Salt and red pepper are added for season¬

ing. This nation can be taken dry. and

consequently without cooking, or it can
