47 - 116Catalytic Oxidation of Furan and Hydrofuran Compounds. Part 2.Oxidation of Furfural in the System Hydrogen Peroxide–VanadylSulfate–Sodium Acetate. — The influence of the presence or absence ofvanadyl sulfate and of the acidity of the reaction media on the outcome of thehydrogen peroxide oxidation of furfural (I) is studied. It is shown that in thepresence of vanadyl sulfate an oxidative decarboxylation takes place. In acidicmedia, the formation of β-formylacrylic acid (III) as well as its cyclic tautomer(II) is favored, while in acetate-buffered solution the succinic acid (IV) is themain product. In the absence of vanadyl sulfate no decarboxylation is observedand the furan-2-carboxylic acid (V) is formed predominantly. — (POSKONIN,V. V.; BADOVSKAYA, L. A.; Khim. Geterotsikl. Soedin.
