What?!? Facts• Did you know there are

over 3000 different chemical additives companies put in food today

• Some of these additives in the food are known to cause cancer

• Some are also known to cause serious allergic reaction

Back in the Day

• Believe it or not there was a time when Food came straight from the farms.

• But now almost all our food supplies have at least a little bit of additives in it.

• Even though those additives that are ‘safe’ individually, they COULD still be harmful when mixed with another additive (and when one is present it’s most likely there’d be more then one.

• Food additive are added to preserve the ‘freshness’ of the product.

• To keep all the healthy/goodness of the food product longer

• When food is not tasty, good-looking or odd texture, food additives are added to make it better.

Three ‘classes’ of Chemical additives

• Benzoates (like sodium benzoate)

• Nitrites (like sodium nitrite)

• Sulphites (like sulphur dioxide)

• All the preserving additives are used to kill or slow down the process pathogens growth.

• They also prevent or slow the chemical reaction of oxidation of food.

• Up to 1950, the most chemical additives added with food was food colouring and it was a simple process.

• Now the process is not as simple as adding it and it’s a lot more then just food colouring.

• First there is the research part then

• When they find a working chemical additive, they just simply add it in the process of the food to make it preserved.

Food additive companies

• Here are some companies that provide food additives that they add into our food supply:

B & A.G Hulme - Essence and compound manufacturers for the soft drink industry.

Casco Inc. - Canadian corn processor which manufactures corn syrup solids, dextrose, maltodextrin and starches.

DPS - Producer of batters and breading systems.

List of food

• Mostly everything you can get from the store have some kinda of chemical additives in them.

• Most of the food that people call ‘junk food’ have tons of chemical additives.

• Since almost everything has chemical additives, therefore most companies do have some kind of chemical additives.

• Pop (Pepsi)

• Chocolate (Hershey)

• Candy (Starburst)

• Yes, it does keep the food for a longer period of time

• It does give it a good taste to those product that taste bad.
