Newborns in Need is a undwithin the Heart o EnglandCharity which supports some othe most vulnerable and poorlybabies at our Hospitals.

Each year Good Hope andHeartlands Hospital care orover 1,000 babies, some owhom are born more than ourmonths early and weigh aslittle as one pound. An averageo one in ten babies born inthe Trust needs the support oour neonatal units, and as weprovide the highest level ocare or the most prematureand most sick babies, theunit also takes babies romacross the whole region. Theneonatal units provide 24

hour care using dedicatedbreathing machines, incubators, and sophisticated monitoringequipment

As the techniques in medicalcare advance, more and moreo our babies survive andenjoy a better chance in lie.The Charity’s aim is to matchthese advances with nancial

support beyond the limits oNHS unding to ensure the verylatest equipment is availableor the patients who need itmost.

The ollowing storyillustrates how vital thework o the Neonatal Unit atHeartlands Hospital is to thepeople o Birmingham andsurrounding areas.

All through my pregnancy Iwas very ill. At 20 weeks I wasdiagnosed with pre-eclampsia,which causes high bloodpressure and fuid retention. Iwas given lots o medicationto help with the symptoms, butwas still very poorly.

At 27 weeks, my conditiondeteriorated and the pre-eclampsia became severe. I

it’s not treated, the condition

can lead to lie-threateningcomplications or both motherand baby. My body swelled uplike a balloon and it elt likethere was someone standingon my chest. My conditiongot so bad I was put in anemergency ambulance toUniversity Hospital Coventry,

where I gave birth to abeautiul baby boy, Mylo. Heweighed just 2lb 3oz.

As soon as he was bornI elt better. It took 4 hoursto stabilise him, but it wasanother 14 hours beore Iwas allowed to see him. Inmy head I tried to preparemysel or seeing him or therst time and was expectingthe worst. It was a shock to

see him so small. Becausemy blood pressure was solow, and Mylo’s conditionwas so serious, we were bothtranserred to HeartlandsNeonatal Unit. I wasdischarged ater a week butMylo stayed in the Unit.

There were times whenI wondered i he’d everbe allowed to leave. I saw

mothers come and go with

their babies, but I never gotthat chance. It was 2 weeksuntil I was allowed to holdhim, and another week or mypartner Andrew. AltogetherMylo was in hospital or 109days, but 15 months later,we’re so happy to say that he’smade a complete recovery.

I got to know members osta and lots o other mums insimilar situations. We becameas close as i we’d known eachother or many years. TheHeartlands Neonatal sta weresome o the nicest people I’veever met and their dedicationwas incredible. Without them,Mylo and mysel would not behere today.

 J a d  e ’  s  S t o r   y

Without the help

of the Neonatal Unit,

me and Mylo would

not be here today.
