Step 1

• Decide if you are making a Character Mug or a Mug Incognito

Step 2 : Character Mug

• Chose a character (real or fictional) that you would like to portray on a mug

• The character must be human• Yes… you can do a friend or family

member• Yes… you can do a self portrait if you

really want to drink from your own head!• Have idea approve by the teacher• BRING IN PHOTOS to work from!

Step 2: Mugs Incognito

• Decide on an everyday object that you want to recreate as a mug

• Must have lots of detail and textures

• Have idea approve by the teacher

• BRING IN PHOTOS or object to work from!

Step 3

• Create detailed sketch from a minimum of 2 angles

• Indicate what colours you would use for your mug on your sketch

Step 4

• Create basic mug structure (there are many ways to get the initial shape)

• Coil mug and smoothing and sealing edges and joints

• Slabs cut and joined• Pinch pot with handle• Sealed pinch pot(s) only opened once design is

complete

Roll Out Coil

Building the Base of Your Coil Mug

Add Sides and Smooth Inside and Outside

Slabs: cut and joined

Roll out clay to even thickness

• Use rolling pin and 2 pieces of wood of the same thickness to help roll an even slab

Use a ruler and sharp edge to cut out the shapes of you mug

Wrap sides around and place on base.Score and Slip all edges together and press

firmly.Smooth edges into sides.

Add sturdy handle with wide or long connections to the sides of your

mug. Score, Slip and Press Firmly!

Pinch pot with handle

Pinch pot is made by pushing your thumb into a ball of clay and pinching and pulling

on the sides until a pot is formed with evenly thick walls

Sealed pinch pot(s) only opened once design is complete

• Same steps as pinch pot but make 2!• Flatten the edges of each pot on table• Score and Slip edges of both pots• Press firmly together and smooth cracks

– Air inside ball will allow your to mold and manipulate the shape of the head

• When finished tap bottom on table to make stable base for the mug

• Use a sharp knife to cut opening for mug and smooth edges

Keep in Mind!

• Glazing… what colours will go where… glazes don’t blend and mix like paints so think about going none realistic with the colours!
