Testing a Hypothesis about a Population Proportion

Hypothesis Test Regarding a Population Proportion, p

If a claim is made regarding the population proportion, we can use the following steps to test the claim, provided that

1. the sample is obtained via simple random sampling, and2. npo(1 – po) > 10 with n < 0.05N (the sample size, n, is no more than 5% of the population size, N).

Step 1: A claim is made regarding the population proportion. The claim is used to determine the null and alternative hypotheses. The hypotheses can be structured in one of three ways:

Step 4: Compare the critical value with the test statistic:

Step 5: State the conclusion.
