The Web

• Web browsers are actually a form of GUI

• Web pages are created with HTML code that is translated by browsers

• Web pages have specific URLs or addresses

• More than one Web page together makes a Web site

Dissection of a URL

http://www.eric.ed.gov/resources/index.html

URLs start with http://to initiate the hypertext transfer protocol used by web sites.

The domain name tells the browser to look for the ERIC server on the web site of the U.S. Dept. of Education.

This part of the URL tellsthe browser to look in theResources folder on theeric.gov web server.

This part of the URLtells the documentto be found in theResource folder.

Web Page Evaluation for Education

• Well organized and logical

• Easy to navigate

• Site authors should be credible

• Bias free

• Should not try to sell anything

• Contain source sitations

• Rubrics on pages 248 and 269

• Graphics or pictures (GIF or JPEG)

• Audio, either WAV files or streaming
