1. Introduction • Seismic isolation system involves installation of
isolators beneath key supporting points of a structure.
• Isolators have much lower lateral stiffness than lateral stiffness of structure
• Seismic isolation system limits seismic energy transfer to structure
• Seismic isolation systems combine two main components:
– Isolator: • e.g. sliding bearings or rubber pads placed between
selected supporting points of structure • Isolators shifts natural period of structure beyond the most
predominant earthquake periods – Energy-dissipation mechanism:
• dampers dissipates residual input energy and limits forces transmitted to structure by increased damping

• Seismic isolation system represents a trade off between force reduction and increased displacement across the isolation system.
• As the flexibility of the isolation system increases, relative movements of the structure relative to its supporting points may become a problem under non-seismic loading, such as wind loads.
