Section 1: Early and Middle Adulthood

Objectives:

• Summarize Daniel Levinson’s theory of adult male development.

• Identify and describe the stages of adult female development.

Stages of Adult Male Development

• Early Adulthood – ages 18-22: leaving the family is a major task; peer support is very important

• Entering the adult world – ages 22-28: beginning adult roles;

• Explore a variety of relationships; • independent; career advancement is

important; possibly a dream of the future is formed.

• Age 30 Transitional Period – ages 28 to 32: • sets to correct flaws in life structure; • divorce, job changes are common; • aspects of life are questioned. Choices made

during this period have long lasting consequences

• Settling down- ages 33-40: individual seeks order and stability; desire to sink roots.

• Major task is “making it in the adult world”; Advance in career;

• Fulfill dreams set in previous stages

• Age 40 Transitional Period- ages 38-42: turning point between young and middle adulthood;

• differences between the dream and reality; • divorce and career changes possible; • advancement and achievement not as

important

• Beginning or middle adulthood- Mid 40s: greater acceptance of self;

• more concerned with enjoying life and work; • greater concern for others

Early Adult Transition • main task is leaving home, both physically andpsychologically• begins when young adults go away to collegeor take full-time employment• break with parents not abrupt or total

Phases of Adult Female Development

• Phase 1: Leaving the Family – young women leave home, break from their parents, and form a life plan, with an emphasis on marriage over establishing a career.

• Phase 2: Entering the Adult World – many women, often in their twenties, marry and have children. More than half combine work and motherhood. Others leave work, which limits later job opportunities.

• Phase 3: Entering the Adult World Again – many women, often in their early thirties, return to work after their children start school. They then pursue their career goals, similar to men in their twenties.

• You will also write a few paragraphs to express/defend its opinion on which system most benefits families, the economy, and society.

Changes in the Nature of Workand the Labor Force

Farming and Manufacturing – fell from 85 percent of the U.S. labor force in 1900 to 27

percent in 2000; most work now is in professions, office work, sales, and service jobs.

Education – workers’ education level has increased; about 90 percent of workers aged 25

to 64 have high school diplomas; about one third have college degrees.

Women – have increased as a percentage of the total labor force; now hold about half of all

Life During Late Adulthood

• Young-Old – ages 65 to 74; issues related to the adjustment of retirement

• Many start a new part time career to avoid atrophy.• Work or activity keeps your mind and body healthy.

• Some elderly face depression due to loss of daily work or lack of contact.

• Others don’t want to associate with “old people”

• Adjustment to retirement can be difficult.

Middle-Old

• Middle-Old – ages 75-84; issues related to declining physical and mental functioning, dependency, and death.

• When we talk about mental functioning in the elderly what is the number one disease that we think of most often?

• Alzheimer’s disease• An organic condition in which the brain cells

progressively deteriorate.

• The disease starts slowly: at first you forget names….then you physically are unable to do things such as drive a car.

• In the advanced stages you can become violent, loose speech, muscle control and vision.

• Eventually you enter a child like state.
