Greece• The civilization of Greece existed from 2500-350 BC.

Different Groups•Crete was the largest island and was a main center for sea trade.•The 300 year “dark age” came up when the Dorians overran.•Hellenistic culture re-emerge.

Ancient Greek•Spartans- military minded people•Athens- Fine arts and beauty• The Athenians and Persians fought the battle of Marathon. The Greeks won the battle.

Height of the Greek Civilization•Pythagorus-Developed math theories•Hippocrates-considered “father of medicine”•Myron’s The Discus Thrower•Herodotus- Greek historian

Famous Greek•Socrates- Asked all questions to students; drank hemlock•Plato- Opened academy after Socrates death; talked about ideal forms of things; questioned reality•Aristotle- Plato’s most famous students; developed idea of how humans act in stupid and evil ways

Hellenistic World•Alex-tutored by Aristotle; spread Greek culture and pulled together Eastern and Western ideas•Alexandria lighthouse•Philosophy•Cynics-live simply, be happy•Stoicism-gain happiness by ignoring emotions, follow reason, accept difficult
