• Created by Dutch of New Netherland in 1660• Fur trade between

native Americans and settlers • Came from Sweden,

• 1664, England takes over Dutch territory in the New world • New Amsterdam

renamed as New York after the English Duke James of York.

• Established 1665. split off from New York.

• At First was a Proprietary Colony: created by a grant of land from a monarch to an individual or family

• Created into a Royal Colony: a Colony controlled directly by the English King.
