Institution in which we make and enforce public policies.

Has 3 powers: Legislative – make laws Executive – enforce laws Judicial – interpret laws

State Territory Government Sovereign People Example: Canada

Nation Group of people Common bond – race, language, religion Example: Cherokee Nation

Nation-state The group of people that are united live

in their own sovereign state. Example: Japan

Stateless-nation The group of people that are united do

not have a country to call their own. Example: Palestine

Evolutionary: Evolved from the heads of families ▪ Examples – elders, tribal chiefs, etc.

Force: Leaders took control by force▪ Examples – dictatorships, Cuba/Castro

Divine Right: God/The Gods choose the leaders or

they are descendants of the Gods.▪ Examples – Monarchs (Pharoahs, Kings, Tsars,

etc.)

Social Contract: Thomas Hobbes & John Locke The people surrendered some of their

own power/rights in exchange for the protection/laws of the government.▪ Examples – democracies,United States
