WHAT IS THE CHANCELLOR’S DOCTORAL INCENTIVE
PROGRAM (CDIP)? Aim:
• Established in 1987 to increase the number of promising doctoral students interested in applying for future CSU instructional faculty positions
Mechanism:
• Provides financial loans and mentor support to full-time graduate students pursuing doctoral degrees at accredited universities throughout the United States
Other Potential Benefit:
• A portion of the CDIP loan will be forgiven for every year of CSU employment after participants receive their doctoral degrees and obtain a qualifying instructional position in the CSU
CDIP CAN HELP YOU SUCCEED!
Financial support • Loans up to $10,000 per year with a maximum
amount of $30,000 over the duration of your doctoral study
• Forgivable at the rate of 20% for each year of full-time postdoctoral teaching employment in the CSU
Mentorship by a CSU faculty mentor • A collaborative plan to support your professional
development in teaching, research and service activities while you are in graduate school
• Advice and guidance to help enhance your potential for employment in a CSU tenure-track faculty position
CDIP SCHOLAR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
• Mini-Grant Program Supports Scholars’ research, teaching or creative activities including thesis and dissertation projects
• Up to $2500 for CDIP Scholar and $1200 for Faculty Mentor
• Travel Grant Program Funds Scholar’s participation in workshops or conferences
• Biannual calls for applications • Up to $1200 per trip for CDIP Scholar and Faculty
Mentor
WHO CAN APPLY TO THE CDIP? • Undergraduate and master’s level
graduate students applying to accredited doctoral programs in the U.S.
• New or continuing full-time doctoral students enrolled in accredited programs in the U.S.
• Lecturers enrolled full-time in doctoral programs
SPECIAL ELIGIBILITY CONSIDERATIONS
• Applicants from professional doctoral degree programs (e.g., EdD, DNP, DPT, DSW, and PsyD) as well as online degree programs (hybrid and fully online) may apply ONLY IF:
• they plan to pursue a tenure-track instructional faculty position; and
• their doctoral program’s mission explicitly includes preparation and training of future university faculty members (you must provide evidence of this mission)
ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY CONCERNS
• You do not have to be a CSU student or employee to apply for the CDIP
• U.S. citizenship is not required, but applicants must be eligible to work in the United States
• Past and current CSU lecturers are encouraged to apply
• About one-fourth of the awards are expected to be made to individuals who have been CSU lecturers in the past two years
CDIP FACULTY MENTOR’S ROLE • To support the CDIP Scholar in doctoral training
• Support development as a researcher • Support development as a teacher
• To help the CDIP Scholar understand the workings of higher education institutions, especially the CSU, and the faculty labor market for the Scholar’s discipline
• Facilitate Scholar’s professional networking • Invite Scholar to CSU campus
• Mentors also help with the preparation of the CDIP application (will be covered in Module 2: Application Guidelines)
WHO CAN SERVE AS A CDIP MENTOR?
• Full-time tenure-track/tenured faculty members at one of the CSU campuses
• Ideally from the same or related discipline as the applicant, but not required
HOW TO FIND A CDIP MENTOR • If you are a current or former CSU student
• Undergraduate advisor • Research mentor/thesis advisor • Faculty member who does the kind of research you
want to pursue in your doctoral program • If you are a current or former CSU lecturer
• Chair of the department you teach in • A tenured/tenure-track faculty member in your discipline
• If you have no ties with anyone on a CSU campus • Research the expertise of faculty at a number of CSU
campuses • Contact faculty who could potentially serve as your
mentor • Location of the CSU campus– proximity or ease of
access

HOW DO I APPLY TO CDIP?
1. Download application forms from the CDIP website at http://www.calstate.edu/hr/cdip
2. Find a faculty mentor at a CSU campus and prepare application
3. Submit application to the CDIP Campus Coordinator of your faculty mentor’s campus
APPLICATION PACKET Include the following documents in your application packet
1. A completed application form 2. A current curriculum vitae 3. Statement of Qualifications and Motivation 4. Collaborative Plan of Support 5. Three professional letters of
recommendation 6. A recent CSU faculty position
announcement in your general field
STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS AND
MOTIVATIONS
• Discuss your commitment to becoming a CSU faculty member in 3 single-spaced pages
• Address how the following have contributed to your commitment:
• Your academic preparation • Your professional experiences • Your motivation and interest • Your connection to the CSU • Your ability to educate a diverse student body

COLLABORATIVE PLAN OF SUPPORT
• Describe in the Collaborative Plan of Support (CPS) how you and your CDIP mentor will work together to ensure your success in doctoral studies and in securing a CSU tenure-track faculty position
• Jointly prepared by you and your mentor • Well defined activities for professional development • A clear timeline for the activities • An adequate plan for substantive and ongoing
communication

POSSIBLE COLLABORATIVE ACTIVITIES
• Outline future joint activities that foster your development in teaching, research, and service, such as
• collaborative syllabus development and teaching • collaborative research projects and publications • collaborative grant proposals • joint participation in professional seminars and meetings • joint presentations in professional forums • involvement in campus committees and meetings • development of a competitive CV for faculty positions
WHAT TO AVOID IN WRITING A CPS
• CPS is about JOINT activities! • Don’t propose activities you plan to do by yourself
• CPS is about FUTURE activities! • Don’t write about what you have done in the past or what you
are currently doing
• CPS is about WELL-ROUNDED development! • Don’t focus only on teaching or research
• CPS is about making a REALISTIC plan! • Don’t promise the moon and the stars
LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
• Three letters of recommendation, including • a letter from your CDIP Faculty Mentor • a letter from a faculty member of your doctoral
program if you are currently enrolled
• What should the letters address? • The quality of your proposed plan of study • The quality of the institutions and departments where
you propose to pursue your degree or are attending • Your potential to succeed as a doctoral student • Your experience and motivation relevant to educating
a diverse student body in the CSU
CSU FACULTY POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
• Attach a copy of recent CSU faculty position announcement
• Position must be in your general field of study from recent years
• Current position announcements are posted on CSU Careers website
• For hiring trends, consult the CSU Faculty Recruitment Data on the CSU Chancellor’s Office website
APPLICATION SUBMISSION
• Submit to your Campus Coordinator by your campus deadline (usually in January/February)
• Your campus is where your CDIP Faculty Mentor is employed!
• All documents must be in one packet in the order indicated on the checklist on the last page of the application form
SELECTION COMMITTEE
• Selection is made by a committee of seven faculty members representing:
• various CSU campuses and across disciplines
• CSU Faculty Senate • California Faculty
Association (CFA) • the Chancellor’s Office
WHAT IS THE SELECTION COMMITTEE LOOKING FOR?
• Applicants’ potential to • successfully earn their
doctorate degree • apply for tenure-track faculty
positions in the CSU • be hired for such positions
SELECTION CRITERIA 1. Quality of doctoral program
• National ranking or status of the doctoral program • Appropriate to applicant’s field of study (e.g., accreditation) • Prepares applicant for tenure-track faculty positions • If a professional and/or online degree program, a case
must be made for appropriateness for a faculty position 2. Academic achievement and potential
• Academic honors and awards • Participation in honors or research training programs (e.g.,
Sally Casanova Predoctoral Program, McNairs Program) • Scholarly presentation and/or publication record relative to
applicant’s year in the program • Research funding
SELECTION CRITERIA
3. Potential to become a professor • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to teaching and
mentoring students • Demonstrated interest in and plan for acquiring pedagogical
knowledge and skills • Evidence of or plan for programmatic research and potential as
a productive scholar • Demonstrated interest in and plan for acquiring knowledge of
and experiences in faculty university service • Demonstrated interest in and plan for professional networking
and leadership or governance roles
SELECTION CRITERIA
4. Connection to CSU/commitment CSU Students • Understanding of the mission and role of the CSU • If not from the CSU, a clear plan of support from a CSU Mentor • Commitment to working with CSU students
5. Potential for successful collaboration between applicant and CSU Faculty Mentor • Strong plan for collaboration in teaching, research, and
professional development • Clearly defined collaborative activities • Feasibility of proposed timeline
SELECTION CRITERIA
6. Potential for mentorship by CDIP Faculty Mentor • A plan for substantive and ongoing communications between
applicant and CDIP Mentor • CDIP Mentor commitment to/experience with mentoring
students, especially during the doctoral program • CDIP Mentor experience with other CDIP Scholars in the past?
7. Prioritization of Discipline Areas • Demonstrated need for faculty hire in the CSU in the
applicant’s discipline • Fields where shortages are anticipated
SELECTION NOTIFICATION
• Applicants are notified of the selection decision from the Chancellor’s Office in May
