Vladimir Mažuranić (by Milivoj Radović)
1915 - 1985
Ivan Vladimir Mažuranić was born in Karlovac on 7 April 1915 and died in Zagreb 6 April 1985. Written documents testify that the Mažuranić family descends from the Northern Croatian coast and that their roots can be tracked to year 1360. While studying the art of painting in 1938 and 1939 he frequently attended the fencing school of the famous master of fencing Maurice Gardère. Vladimir Mažuranić was a typical foilist. According to the necessity in terms of team competition he fenced sabre or epée, but never practised them. His masters were: dr. Franjo Bučar and his father Božidar, followed by Milutin Fabijanec; from 1932 Francesco Tirelli and Dante Galante in Zagreb, and in Paris Maurice Gardère and his son André Gardère (1938-1939). After WWII he was taught by Stjepan Kerec and Ennio Zamichieli from Venice and in 1958 Janos Kevey from Hungary. He became a senior fencer by becoming the junior champion of Yugoslavia in foil in 1932. He competed on tournaments from 1932 to 1950. From 1935 he was member of club, municipal, regional (Banovina), republic and national teams. Abroad he competed in Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Italy, France, Rumania and Turkey, everywhere achieving extinguishing results. In 1936 he was member of the state team at the Olympic games in Berlin, in 1937 he was the most successful foilist at the Championship of Minor Atanta in Prague; in 1938 in Paris he fenced for the team “Foreigners in Paris” and achieves two victories. The same year in Paris he defeats Charles Lion, the French champion and the World vice-champion (10:7). He was senior champion of Yugoslavia in 1947, 1949 and 1951. In 1949 he was champion of Graz (Austria). At the championship of cities in Vienna 1950 he defeated all of his opponents. Likewise in Bonn and Munich. From 1950 to 1968 Vlatko Mažuranić was regular trainer and master in AMK (Academic fencing club) Mladost in Zagreb. From 1969 to 1970 he was teaching fencing in Salzburg (Austria). After returning to Zagreb he continued his fruitful work in AMK Mladost until his retirement in 30 June 1984.
