Understanding the Constitution

Delegated powers are powers given to the Federal Government by the Constitution.

The elastic clause was placed in the Constitution to allow the national government to stretch its powers.

Apportionment

• The process used to determine how many representatives each state should have based on population. It is determined by the US Census.

Every ten years there is a census to count the nation’s population.

Article II specifies the powers of the Executive Branch.

Impeach

• An action of Congress that brings official charges against the president.

The veto is the presidential power to cancel legislation passed by Congress.

Pardon

• This is granted to give freedom from punishment. The president can grant this.

Article III defines the duties of the courts.
