This is My Beloved Son, With Whom I am Well Pleased . . .

Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door
which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as
sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in
her mission (CCC ¶ 1213).

We stand at a threshold today. The feast we celebrate this Sunday, the Baptism of the Lord, is both
the last day of the Christmas Season and the first Sunday of Ordinary Time. In the Church’s
calendar, we straddle two liturgical seasons; borrowing the language of the Catechism, we are in a
gateway, a door.

The Lord’s baptism in the Jordan River was a gateway moment for Him, as well. It marked His
emergence from the private sphere of life to His public ministry. John understood the baptism he
offered as a preparation for the Messiah’s coming, but Christ transformed it into the sacrament now
entrusted to His Church.

The Christ’s ministerial activity is launched by a public act, accompanied by an equally public
manifestation of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit descends from above as Christ emerges from the
waters; the Father audibly affirms His love for the Son. And even though Jesus immediately goes
into seclusion by making a fortyday retreat in the desert, He nonetheless has already begun His
ministry. Mark says that the Spirit who had descended on Jesus drove Him into the wildernessa
verb that suggests both an urgent sense of purpose and obedience. From the time of His baptism
onward everything Christ does is an action of His salvific mission, no longer for Himself alone but
always to fulfill the Father’s will, to accomplish His goal, and always for us. He no longer is Jesus of
Nazareth, but Jesus Christthe one anointed to be sent into the world to save the world.

Even in John’s Gospel, Jesus has no more personal life after He had been anointed by the Holy
Spirit at His baptism. He tries to simply remain a guest at the wedding at Cana, but His mother
intuitively knows that His mission, once begun, is constantly unfolding and can’t be suspended. His
hour may not have come, as He tells her, but His ministry nevertheless is in motion.

This is pointed at us, too. Our own baptism is no less the beginning of a public mission. Jesus’s
baptism was a liturgy, celebrated in full view of witnesses; our baptism also is a liturgical celebration
before the witness of the whole Church. And just as the Lord’s baptism gave a new shape to every
action of His life, moving Him ever onward toward the coming of His hour, so too our baptism gives
new form to even the most ordinary moments of our life, drawing us forward to our own “hour.” So
the “ordinary time” that we begin today is no less holy than the season we leave behind. It is always
ordered to our true destiny.

Our baptism isn’t something we can keep quiet, or keep to ourselves. By its very nature it is a public
sacrament, and it gives us a permanent character, molding us after the character of Christ Himself.
It places our life inside the Churchit makes our life a public lifeand so is meant to be lived
publicly within the Church. Our faith can’t be a private affair; our baptism only gushes when it
washes over everything we do, driving us to transform the plain water of everyday life into the choice
wine of living in the Father’s will. Anointed with the Holy Spirit ourselves, we continue Christ’s salvific
mission and become beloved children in whom our Father is well pleased.

Espírito Santo no Seu batismo.

missão pública. O batismo de Jesus foi uma liturgia, celebrada em plena vista de testemunhas;
