contributes to fulfilling the Mandate of the Office)
Vision The UP Center for Women’s and Gender Studies as the lead research and policy advocacy hub for gender and women’s studies in the country Mission • To sharpen awareness about women’s and gender issues in the UP as well as in the larger
society by developing cutting-edge instructional materials and publishing state of the art research
• To strengthen research and extension programs on gender and women’s studies in the UP by conducting innovative studies and supporting gender research by the academic community
• To strengthen instructional and curricular development on gender and women’s studies in the UP through gender mainstreaming and forward-looking course design
• To develop the next generation of academic leaders in gender and women’s studies through collaboration and mentoring
• To provide an organizational umbrella for system-wide activities in women’s and gender
studies
Research
The research program focuses on the generation of empirical, theoretical and policy-action
studies to support the teaching, publication and extension programs of the UP. Its projects
are interdisciplinary and collaborative, as they draw on the expertise of scholars from the
various academic disciplines across campuses.
Publication and Resource Collection
Publication
The CWGS has two regular publications: the Pananaw and the Review of Women’s Studies
(RWS). The Pananaw is a magazine on gender-related issues in UP and its networks, while
the RWS is a peer-reviewed journal with international readership.
The Center also publishes two occasional publications, launched in 2011 and 2016,
respectively: the UPCWS Occasional Papers and Monographs Series and the Kasarian:
Occasional Papers on Sex and Gender.
Resource Collection
The Center has a collection of published and unpublished research papers, video materials
and documentary films on women’s studies for classroom teaching and gender sensitivity
seminars and workshops. The library is open to students and researchers.

Curriculum Development
Raising the gender awareness of the different campuses of the UP System toward a more
humane University is the basic mandate of the CWGS. Among its strategies to achieve this is
the mainstreaming of gender in the academic curricula, including the General Education (GE)
Curriculum.
This program is carried out through the research, publication, and training programs.
