Okay…some basics:

Write this down 100,000 times:

ALL LIVING THINGS UNDERGO SOME FORM

OF CELLULAR RESPIRATION.

But WHAT, you ask, is ATP?

(I knew you’d ask!)

ATP = Adenosine TriPhosphate

ATP is just like MONEY for our

bodies. We need it to do

everything….even dumb looks you

give your teacher!

The ATP-ADP CycleCould this be more exciting?

The energy from ATP comes from the chemical bond between the last two phosphates.

ATP is broken into ______ and a free __________. This gives off ______!

ADPphosphate

energy

What do WE need to make energy?

What do Humans need to make energy?

AND

Respiration Song…Yup…you heard it here!

The (General) Formula for Aerobic Respiration

There is ONE type of cellular respiration and TWO types of fermentation (these two will be covered in a few more slides!):

OR

The Not-So-Exciting-But-Really-Accurate Video

Glucose + Oxygen Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energyenzymes

C6H12O6 + O2 CO2 + H2O + 36 ATPenzymes

Hmm…Is it really that simple?

Of course it isn’t! Don’t fall for her

tricks!!

The REAL scoop….

1. ALL types of respiration/fermentation start with a process called GLYCOLYSIS.

2. Glyco=Glucose, Lysis=Split

Glucose + 2 ATP 4 ATP + 2 Pyruvic Acid

3. THEN…Pyruvic Acids are plugged into a second formula based on the types of enzymes present and whether or not oxygen is available.

We now interrupt your notes for a silly analogy…

Aunt Mabel had altercation with the police and mysteriously

disappeared…

The very next day…The 3 Stooges come into Money

Part I: Their initial investment strategy…

GlycoBank:

$100 gets turned into 2 $50 bills and

$4 interest

(really only a net gain of $2 after the

initial $2 service charge for opening

a new account)

Moe’s brilliant plan!

Mrs. Krebs earns $2 more

ETC earns $32 more for a total of $36

After the disappointing return from the GlycoBank…

Curly’s less than brilliant plan…

Earned only original $2 and sore muscles from lactic acid buildup.

Louie’s Gym

Larry’s least brilliant plan…

Moe’s Bar

Earned only original $2 and alcohol and CO2 poisoning.

Stooges Investments: Review

GlycoBank2, $50 bills$2 interest

Mrs. Krebs $2ETC $32

Net gain $36

Louie’s Gym$0

Net gain $2

Moe’s Bar$0

Net gain $2

The End of the Story

Curly won a “Mr. Universe” contest last year.

Larry had to go to “detox” for a while but now he heads up AA meetings and is doing well.

With all his money, Moe became a wealthy playboy and married well!

And you thought they became famous movie actors!

Hey! How does all this hooha relate to biology for crying

out loud!

Yeah, some of it is real personal

stuff like the chick Moe married!

LOL

It’s respiration you fools! Ya know, to make

energy?

Cellular Respiration: Look familiar?

Glycolysis

Aerobic Respirationw/ Oxygen

Anaerobic Lactic Acid

Fermentationw/out Oxygen

AnaerobicAlcohol

Fermentationw/out Oxygen

Pathway depends on: and oxygen enzymes

The THREE types of ENERGY CONVERSTION are:

1.Aerobic Cellular Respiration

2.Anaerobic Lactic Acid Fermentation

3.Anaerobic Alcohol Fermentation

36 ATP ,Needs Oxygen!

2 ATP, Does NOT need Oxygen!

2 ATP, Does NOT need Oxygen!

Aerobic Respiration

1. Glycolysis: The splitting of glucose.

- occurs in the cytoplasm

C6H12O6 + 2 ATP 2 pyruvic acid + 4 ATP (total net gain of 2 ATP)

2. Kreb’s Cycle and ETC (Electron Transport Chain):

- occurs in the mitochondria

pyruvic acid + oxygen carbon dioxide + water + 34 ATP

For a Grand Total of:36 ATP

Anaerobic Lactic Acid Fermentation

1. Glycolysis: The splitting of glucose.

- occurs in the cytoplasm

C6H12O6 + 2 ATP 2 pyruvic acid + 4 ATP (total net gain of 2 ATP)

2. Lactic Acid Fermentation:

- occurs in the cytoplasm

2 pyruvic acid 2 lactic acid

For a Grand Total of:2 ATP

Anaerobic Alcohol Fermentation

1. Glycolysis: The splitting of glucose.

- occurs in the cytoplasmC6H12O6 + 2 ATP 2 pyruvic acid + 4 ATP (total net gain of 2

ATP)

2. Alcohol Fermentation:- occurs in cytoplasmpyruvic acid alcohol + carbon

dioxide

Anaerobic Lactic Acid Anaerobic Lactic Acid Fermentation:Fermentation:

Pyruvic Acid Lactic AcidEnzymes

Step 1: Glycolysis

Step 2: Anaerobic Lactic Acid Fermentation

Anaerobic Lactic Acid Fermentation Cool Facts!

2 pyruvic acid 2 lactic acid – Lactic Acid Fermentation by Microorganisms

plays an Essential role in the manufacture of Food Products such as YOGURT and CHEESE

– Lactic Acid Production in humans results in muscle fatigue.

Anaerobic Alcohol Anaerobic Alcohol Fermentation:Fermentation:

Pyruvic Acid Alcohol + CO2

Enzymes

Step 1: Glycolysis

Step 2: Anaerobic Alcohol Fermentation

AnaerobicAlcohol Fermentation Cool Facts!

2 pyruvic acid 2 Alcohol + 2CO2

– Alcohol Fermentation by yeast plays an essential role in the manufacture of bread, beer and wine.

Anaerobic Alcohol Fermentation Cool Facts

continuedAlcoholic Fermentation is used to

make wine, beer, and the ethanol added to gasoline to make gasohol.

The fact that alcohol is used to power a car indicated the amount of Energy that remains in the Alcohol Molecules.

So…eat your Wheaties and make lots of ATP!
