Nooit is zo openhartig, onderhoudend én

Amsterdam, H.J. Paris, 1935. Wrappers. With plate. VIII,170 pp. - (Thesis). € 65,00
François Tack was the leader of a V.O.C. delegation to Susuhunan Amangkurat II,
ruler of the kingdom of Mataram, who held court in Kartasura. The aim of this
mission was to make a settlement concerning the money the Susuhunan owed to the
V.O.C and to ask for extradition of Surapati, a former Balinese slave, who raided the
countryside south of Batavia and who had sought refuge at the court of Amangkurat
II. The Dutch who thought of Surapati as a murderer, never succeeded to caputure
him. The Javanese on the other hand thought of him as a warrior for freedom. The
story of Surapati's life is told in the Javanese text Babad Kraton.

Cornelis de Houtman (2 April 1565 – 1 September 1599), brother of Frederick de
Houtman, was a Dutch explorer who discovered a new sea route from Europe to
Indonesia and managed to begin the Dutch spice trade. At the time, the Portuguese
Empire held a monopoly on the spice trade, and the voyage was a symbolic victory
for the Dutch, even though the voyage itself was a disaster. Houtman was also a spy,
having worked against the Portuguese by bringing back to the Netherlands privileged
nautical information obtained during his stay in Portugal.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century Dutch
diplomats, scholars and travellers assembled unique
collections in Jeddah, Mecca and Medina. The Dutch
presence in Arabia, where they established a consulate in
Jeddah, was intimately connected with the supervision of
the annual pilgrimage to Mecca from the Netherlands
East Indies, present-day Indonesia. Notable guests at this
consulate included the formidable Dutch Islamicist Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje,
visiting Arabia in 1884-1885.
