CAST OUT DEMONS

26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. 27 When

Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time

this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he

saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice,

Luke 8:26-39

“What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit

to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon

into solitary places.

Luke 8:26-39

30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the

Abyss. 32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave

them permission. Luke 8:26-39

33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. 34 When those tending the pigs saw what had

happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went

out to see what had happened.

Luke 8:26-39

When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind;

and they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear.

Luke 8:26-39

So he got into the boat and left. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged

to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much

God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had

done for him.

Luke 8:26-39

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the

authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of

evil in the heavenly realms.

A) Demons Tremble before His Presence

God is uncreated, Satan is created

Whether one or six thousand, the presence of Jesus is sufficient to cast

out ALL demons

B) Demons Tremble before His Power

“Demon theology is orthodox.”

- John MacArthur -

“Jesus, Son of the Most High God”

Luke 8:29

33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who

you are—the Holy One of God!”

Luke 4:33-35

35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man

down before them all and came out without injuring him.

“You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that--and shudder.”

James 2:19

At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and

of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:10-11

C) Demons Tremble before His Punishment

The Abyss is a foreshadowing of the eternal destruction of all

demonic powers

1 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and

holding in his hand a great chain. 2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the

devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3 He threw him into the Abyss, and

locked and sealed it over him,

Revelation 20:1-3; 7-10

to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended.

After that, he must be set free for a short time… 7 When the thousand years are over,

Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations in the four

corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—and to gather them for battle.

Revelation 20:1-3; 7-10

9 They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God’s people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven

and devoured them. 10 And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of

burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be

tormented day and night for ever and ever.Revelation 20:1-3; 7-10

The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.

1 John 3:8

You rewind the tape of redemption history to remind demons of the past

and you fast-forward the tape of redemption history to remind demons

of their future

3) Delivered Proclamation(vs. 34-39)

34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When

they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at

Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

Luke 8:34-39

36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured.

37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him,

but Jesus sent him away, saying, Luke 8:34-39

39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away

and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.

Luke 8:34-39

The people had become so accustomed to the demonic that they feared

deliverance

The best questions to ask, are the questions embedded in the biblical text:

How much has God done for you?

One of the key components of the Gospel is Jesus’ triumph over Satan

13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and

condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.

Colossians 2:13-15

15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Colossians 2:13-15

“As a witness to Christ, the sermon is a struggle with demons. Every sermon must overcome Satan.

Every sermon fights a battle. sermon must overcome Satan. Every sermon fights a battle. But this does

not occur through the dramatic efforts of the preacher. It happens only through the proclamation

of the One who has trodden upon the head of the devil. We usually do not recognize Satan anyway.

We do not find him; Christ finds him. The devil departs from him. Satan waits nowhere so for

his prey as where the congregation gathers itself. Nothing is more important to him than to hinder

Christ’s coming to the congregation. Therefore Christ must be preached.”
