DeGrussa Project: Mine Site Background
Degrussa Mine:
Mining: Gold and copper
Location: Doolgunna Region, WA
900 km North of Perth
Owner/Operator: Sandfire Resources NL
Power Supply:
Diesel Generators: 19MW
Operator: KPS
Avg. load: ~ 11MW
Avg. consumption: ~ 100GWh p.a.
Diesel Power Supply Constraints:
• High price (and likely to increase);
• Fluctuating prices;
• Supply unreliable (trucked to site).

DeGrussa Project: System Components
“Standard” Solar PV System
• 34,080 polycrystalline modules;
• Distributed DC Combiner boxes;
• 5 x 2MW containerized inverter stations with Tx station;
Proven Battery/Battery Inverter technology
• 2 x 2MW (3MW peak) Grid forming battery inverters;
• 2 x 900kWh (3.6mw Peak) LI-ion battery containers.
Solar/Hybrid Controller:
• Distributed controllers;
• Remote monitoring and control;
• Functionalities include spinning reserve control, solar
smoothing (ramp rate control), frequency control, reactive
power control and priority dispatch of solar PV energy.

DeGrussa Project: Control System Design
Night Time Operation
• 100% reliant on Diesel Power Station
• Battery Station provides Frequency and Reactive
Power Support
• Option for Battery Station to provide additional spinning
reserve.

DeGrussa Project: Control System Design
Daytime Operation
• Mine operations reliant primarily on the Diesel Power
Station;
• Solar PV generation maximized through optimum
function of the integration philosophy;
• Key constraints that determine the PV production
include the mine load, minimum diesel loading,
minimum number of generators online and the
required spinning reserve.
• Spinning reserve requirement of 100% coverage of
solar PV output + buffer outlined by Sandfire;
• Ramp rate determined by Diesel Power Station
constraints (limited by storage/spinning reserve
capacity);
• “Diesel off mode” possible.

Challenges – Brownfield Projects on Minesites
Cost savings are not material compared with business turnover;
Mine life restricting PPA length;
Non-core business drain on time and money;
Little technical understanding of renewable energy;
Additional construction/operational requirements compared with standard solar PV projects.
juwi Renewable Energy Pty Ltd
Challenges – Hybrid Project Commercials
Financing
• Higher risk (potential for a stranded asset);
• Limited Hybrid Renewable energy experience;
• Guarantee requirements become complex;
• Complex Due diligence requirements;
• Complex legal negotiations.
System Cost
• Engineering - Substantial design process;
• Additional equipment (battery, inverters etc.);
• Installation costs (labor, transport etc.);
• Logistics - Remote operation and maintenance;
juwi Renewable Energy Pty Ltd
Challenges - Solar PV Production
Soiling losses in dusty region with heavy equipment;
Solar curtailment due to constrained grid;
Longevity of equipment in harsh conditions;
(vegetation management not an issue)
juwi Renewable Energy Pty Ltd
Project Benefits
Reduction in power costs:
Cheaper than diesel generation (subject to diesel price
and PPA term);
PPA price is fixed for the contract term;
Auxiliary benefits not quantified in financial model
(reactive power control, frequency control)
Reduced exposure to power price rises:
Fossil fuel market prices;
Transport;
Exchange rate;
Current & future cost of CO2.
juwi Renewable Energy Pty Ltd
Project Benefits (cont’d)
Technical Benefits
Energy security;
Improved power quality and power system reliability;
Better monitoring analysis;
Employee energy consciousness;
Supplier/ experience for future projects.
Social License
Sustainability image (“the solar mine”);
Local employment;
Increased marketing/recognition.
