HUMOR

A Vision - Wendell Berry

If we will have the wisdom to survive, to stand like slow-growing trees on a ruined place, renewing, enriching it,

if we will make our seasons welcome here, asking not too much of earth or heaven,

then a long time after we are dead the lives our lives prepare will live there, their houses strongly placed upon the valley sides, fields and gardens rich in the windows.

A Vision - Wendell Berry

The river will run clear, as we will never know it, and over it, birdsong like a canopy.

On the levels of the hills will be green meadows, stock bells in noon shade.

On the steeps where greed and ignorance cut down the old forest, an old forest will stand, its rich leaf-fall drifting on its roots.

A Vision - Wendell Berry

The veins of forgotten springs will have opened.

Families will be singing in the fields.

In their voices they will hear a music risen out of the ground. They will take nothing from the ground they will not return, whatever the grief at parting.

A Vision - Wendell Berry

Memory, native to this valley, will spread over it like a grove, and memory will grow into legend, legend into song, song into sacrament.

The abundance of this place, the songs of its people and its birds, will be health and wisdom and indwelling light.

This is no paradisal dream.

Its hardship is its possibility.

ROMANS 8: 18-2518-21  That’s why I don’t think there’s any comparison between the present hard times and the coming good times. The created world itself can hardly wait for what’s coming next. Everything in creation is being more or less held back. God reins it in until both creation and all the creatures are ready and can be released at the same moment into the glorious times ahead. Meanwhile, the joyful anticipation deepens.

ROMANS 8: 18-2522-23 All around us we observe a pregnant creation. The difficult times of pain throughout the world are simply birth pangs. But it’s not only around us; it’s within us. The Spirit of God is arousing us within. We’re also feeling the birth pangs. These sterile and barren bodies of ours are yearning for full deliverance.

ROMANS 8: 18-2523b-25 That is why waiting does not diminish us, any more than waiting diminishes a pregnant mother. We are enlarged in the waiting. We, of course, don’t see what is enlarging us. But the longer we wait, the larger we become, and the more joyful our expectancy.

CRISIS OF OUR CHURCHOur Crisis is real:

Mainline Protestants suffered the biggest drop in the loss of their children: for the last half century roughly 1/3 have left the faith completely. When added to the 20% of mainline offspring who have stopped coming to church, mainline Protestants have lost more than half of their children.

CRISIS

With the loss of our Matures:

•We are bleeding from both ends:

•Our older members and our younger generations.

CRISIS OVERBLOWN?

•The politics of Doom

•Doom sells!

•Lovett Weems: “Death Tsunami”

•But is our crisis any more serious than in any other epoch of Christian history?

•Probably not!

MEETING THE CHALLENGE

•Meeting the challenge of a crisis: LEADERSHIP!

•“When the waters are calm anyone can drive the boat, but when the storm comes, I want the Captain at the helm.” --Peter Drucker

•At this time in our history we need bold and courageous leadership!
