Mr. Hawkins – Period 6

The first steamboat was invented in 1787 by John Fitch.

Steamboats were used for delivering over sea goods.

We still use boats of delivering goods, but we also use them for luxury.

The first steamboat was invented in 1787 by John Fitch.

He was granted his first US patent for a steam boat on August 26, 1791. That same year was beginning of the era of the steamboat in America.

The first steamboat expedition was taken in 1787 by John Finch.

It went a whole 5mph. To him and his crew, it felt much faster then

we would think now.

More history needs to go here. Try to get as much as possible. Preferably about ten slides all together of history… (if possible…) thanks!

Two famous steamboats include the Titanic and the Queen Mary.

The Titanic is famous for being the largest, most comfortable, and being completely “unsinkable.”

That saying didn’t last long.

The Titanic was one of the largest steamships ever build for its time.

It was built in 1912. Sadly it sink on its Maiden voyage on 14th

April 1912.

The type engine that was used in steamboats back then was the steam engine.

This was used from James Watt’s design of the steam engine.

Steam engines back then were mainly used for transporting goods from one place to another over seas.

Today boats are still used for transporting goods from one place to another.

But we also use them for recreational things.

Because of the steamboat we have things like cruise ships, fishing boats, submarines, and many other kinds of boats.

Boiler- large enclosed metal drum which water heats to create steam

Brig- jail located at the back of the engine that was used in the 1990s

Buckets- large wooden plank attached to the paddlewheel shaft which pushed water away from the boat

Calliope- on steamboat, steam powered pipe organ Steam boat jobs- captain, deck hand, first mate, fireman,

engineer, purser, Paddlewheel- method of propulsion on a steam boat Port- left side of any boat Smokestacks- tall stacks on a steam boat that let smoke Transport- to carry or move people or cargo place to place Stern- rear or back end of a boat where paddlewheel is located
