This Friday the College celebrates the Feast of Blessed Edmund Rice with a special Liturgy on in the Callan Centre beginning at
9am. I extend an invita on to all parents to join the staff and students at this special Liturgy.
This week a panel of representa ves from EREA have been mee ng at St Patrick’s College as part of our School Renewal. I
thank those who have assisted by being part of interview groups. The purpose of the School Renewal is to examine the
‘culture’ of St Patrick’s College and importantly examine how we enact the Charter and ‘live’ as a Catholic School in the
Edmund Rice Tradi on. The panel concludes their visit on Friday and will prepare a report for the College, and Wayne Tinsey
will present this to us later in the year. Once presented, I will communicate the outcomes via the Calling.
Throughout this year the College Leadership Team have been conduc ng enrolment interviews. We are currently doing
interviews for Year 7 2015, and Year 8 2015. If you have sons who will be enrolling in either of these year levels or have friends
who may require these year levels, please contact Mrs Jan Thompson on 3631 9015 as soon as possible. There are limited
spaces in these year levels so please contact the College quickly.
Last Saturday, amidst the rain, Round 1 of CIC and AIC sport commenced at Curlew Park. It was a difficult day because of the
weather, however, I wish to congratulate all players on their conduct, sportsmanship and commitment. This week all teams are
away and I ask that the same level of sportsmanship and commitment are displayed as we visit the schools this weekend.
All students in Years 5,7 and 9 will par cipate in the NAPLAN Tests in a couple of weeks me. These are very important tests
for the boys. The teachers are currently working with the students preparing them for these tests. I would ask parents to
encourage their sons as NAPLAN approaches. By their very nature, the NAPLAN Tests place pressure on the students and
subsequently on parents and staff. By suppor ng each other we can successfully journey through the tes ng days. I will
con nue to remind parents about these tests over the next few weeks.
As you would be aware, this year is the College’s 60th year and a range of ac vi es are being planned. One important event on
our calendar is the 60 Year Gala Dinner on Saturday 4 August. This will be a great night to celebrate our proud history and
reconnect with past friends. Bookings can be made via the College Office. Get a table of friends together and have a great
night.
Next week the second of our Parent Informa on Evenings will be held on Wednesday 9 May in the Waterford Building. Our
guest speaker is Dr Paul Gibney and he will address the topic of “Dealing and Coping with the Adolescent”. It will be an
informa ve and valuable evening. Bookings are essen al so please contact the College Office on 3631 9000 to secure your
booking.

I had the pleasure earlier this week to spend three days on the Kairos Retreat. We had 35 Year 12 students in our group on
the Sunshine Coast while another 35 Year 12 students a ended Kairos 3 at Springbrook. It is not o en in our lives that we
are able to take three days out of our normal rou ne to stop and reflect on who is important, and what is important in our
lives. It is a wonderful opportunity and one that our young men took with both hands. I personally enjoyed Kairos but I
par cularly appreciated the way the Year 12s involved themselves in the retreat experience. It is a special me to see 35
seventeen year old young men , when asked, to immediately find their own quiet space and to start journaling about vari‐
ous aspects of their lives. It is o en difficult to reflect on our own lives but to see the students immediately engross them‐
selves in this process is very heart warming. I encourage everyone to try to find those precious few minutes every so o en
to stop and reflect on the important people and events in our lives. As Parents we can assist our sons by regularly asking
them about their day and what has happened during their day. Talking to our sons about significant people in your family
and your son’s life is a wonderful gi you can give your son.
Our Inter‐House Cross Country was held last Thursday at Curlew Park. I would like to thank and congratulate our Ground
staff who worked so hard in ensuring Curlew Park was in excellent condi on for the carnival. The condi ons were great for
the runners and the boys responded with a great level of par cipa on and effort. The following boys achieved places in

E dmund Rice did a good job. I would hazard a guess, in fact, that he far exceeded his own ex‐pecta ons. Let’s face it – if Edmund Rice, an
Irishman born in the small town of Callan who lived and worked in Waterford, could know what he began in the early 1800s, he’d be almigh ly surprised. If he knew that 250 years a er he was born, in a city nearly as far away from Callan as possible, that people would be cel‐ebra ng his life and doing whatever they could to repli‐cate his work in their own context, you would have to think he’d be reasonably chuffed with that legacy. I’m a fan of Edmund Rice – this will come as no great surprise considering the role I have gravitated towards. This week though, as we celebrate the Feast Day of Blessed Edmund Rice (5 May), I have been reflec ng on what it is about this man that has a racted me to his story and his charism. If I am to be honest though, it is not just the work of Edmund which inspires me, but the work of the Chris an Brothers also – the Congrega on which Edmund began, and which con nues to do amazing work all around the globe today. Like Australia’s first saint, Mary MacKillop, Edmund in many ways was a simple person. He saw a need and sought about addressing that need as effec vely as he could. Edmund saw poor boys on the streets in his town, and was not sa sfied with their bleak future. Edmund was a man of faith and a man of ac on. Through his close rela onship with his God, and his devo on to Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary, Edmund was able to discern a way forward. His wise approach was to address the needs of the poor boys through challenging the status quo and breaking the cycle of poverty by providing a way out – educa on. His work inspired others, and other men joined him. These men became the first Chris an Brothers. I have been fortunate enough to meet, know, work with and become friends with numerous Chris an Brothers. These men have inevitably inspired me to be a be er teacher, a be er leader and a be er man. The Brothers have a simple mo o: to do and to teach. Their work and legacy however is far more profound. Through establishing and running numerous very good schools, the Brothers have educated young men who have become people who make extraordinary contribu ons to their families, their communi es and their world. Today, St Patrick’s College a empts to con nue this endeavour.
We are very fortunate to have two ac ve Chris an Brothers in our community in Br Chris Pritchard and Br Col Fitzgerald. These men not only provide great service to our College, but they also provide our boys with something which will unfortunately not last forever – a tangible link to an incredibly special group of men – men who have devoted their life to Christ and to one of His great followers, Edmund Igna us Rice. Tomorrow, as a College community, we will celebrate Blessed Edmund’s Feast Day, and all are welcome to the Callan Centre at 9am. And perhaps Edmund is looking over us this weekend – we even get to celebrate by having an extra day off! Have a great long weekend.

The $2 a day challenge takes place from 7 May ‐11 May. This year we would like to en‐courage more members of the community to get involved.
The challenge is to set yourself a budget of $2 a day for food.
Why $2 a day? In 2005, the World Bank defined the extreme poverty line as living on less than US$1.25 (the current equivalent of $2 in Australia) per day. The rules are below if you would like to think about it. We’re hoping to get plenty of students and families involved this year and we hope to get plenty of staff joining them as well. You can certainly work in teams or with another family and put your money together to get yourself some good meals. For those who did it last year I think we can all admit it was a tough but worthwhile experience and gives us some insight to living on the other end of the scale.
The Rules (for those who really like to be certain) Here are the basics:
From the 7 ‐ 11 of May you can spend no more than $2 a day on food and drink.
You have a total of $10 with which to buy all ingredients for your meals.
The full cost of all the items you consume must be included in your budget. This means budge ng for whole packets of rice, salt, sugar, eggs etc. You can share the cost of ingredients amongst a team, as long as no par cipant spends more than $2 a day, or more than their total $10 budget.
You cannot grab a cheeky snack from the cupboard unless you have included the cost of buying the item new from the supermarket in your budget.
You can use food sourced from your garden, but only if you have included in your budget the cost of buying it from a market, supermarket or other supplier.
You cannot accept 'donated' food from family or friends (but monetary dona ons towards your fundraising goal are acceptable, and encouraged!).
For some people the full challenge is not possible. If you’re too young to take part, or lead a busy work life we encourage you to take a one day challenge ‐ feeding yourself with just $2 worth of food ‐ to get an insight into the experiences of those who survive on this amount for all their needs.

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, Year 12s who did not a end Kairos, undertook two days of prac ce for the QCS Test. As indicated previously, this test held across Queensland in Term 3 is vitally important in the calcula on of Year 12 OP scores. My view is that whilst many of the skills required for QCS should be experienced within the school curriculum, a rigorous ex‐ternal prepara on program is also important. The performance of the students over the two days was solid. Certainly all were a en ve and completed all ac vi es quite willingly. What was missing was an energy. This is a rather abstract quality and as such is difficult to define but refers to a sense of enthusiasm that can be extremely mo va ng. The relevance of this is obvious for the en re school. Simply going through the mo ons will not allow a student to do as well as he possibly can. Whether it’s QCS or the class and assessment work of the younger grades, as a student body we must try to develop the energy levels which will lead to an enthusias c engagement with our tasks. Year 12s have now completed each of the QCS disciplines (wri ng task, short response items and mul ple choice) at least once. The tasks are hard and early results are o en not that strong. Past experience has shown that improvement over the course of our prepara on program can be quite strong. Can I remind all parents and boys in Years 7‐10 about the protocols for the storage and use of the laptops. Our policies and procedures require students to keep the computers either in bags or lockers. Boys must refrain from leaving the devices una ended on the ground. Our laptop supplier is the Dell company. As part of our lease agreement, Dell provide servicing of laptops which are not work‐ing effec vely. Since the beginning of last year, Dell has also replaced screens which may have been cracked. Due to the large number of cracked screens, Dell is now asking for a damage report on all computers. Previously they have replaced the screens free of charge. In the last fortnight they have charged a fee for the repair of computers which have been damaged through carelessness. One student le the laptop una ended on the ground and a student stepped on it. Although this was an accident with no hint of malice, the leaving of the computer was careless and in breach of College policy. Unfortunately the student received a bill for the repairs. Another screen was cracked because a student walking past, flicked the screen closed while the owner was working. Again Dell classified this as careless/malicious damage and the student who flicked the screen was given a bill. It is essen al that we take good care of the computers. They are a necessary component of our academic program in the middle phase of school. Let’s be a li le more vigilant in looking a er the devices.

It has been a very posi ve start to the new Term. Students have been quick to se le back into work and College rou ne a er a well deserved break. It is important that we maintain this standard for the remainder of the Term. Saturday Sport: I wish to remind all students in Years 8‐12 that they must wear the College uniform travelling to and from the various spor ng grounds. If students are suppor ng other teams throughout the day they must be in full school uniform. Students who are not wearing the College uniform will be asked to leave. It is important that parents assist us in this ma er. Public Transport: St Patrick’s is a great school but it can be let down in its public image if the students are poorly behaved on public transport. The College will not tolerate poor behaviour on public transport. Students misbehaving in this area will face a range of consequences as a result of their ac ons. Boys who catch the train to and from school are reminded that they are not to break their journey. If they are changing trains at Northgate Sta on they must catch the first available train to their des na on. Students must not wait around on the pla orm for friends and then catch the late train as this o en delays their arrival to school. Inter‐House Cross Country – May I congratulate the students on a very posi ve day on Thursday for the annual Inter‐House Cross Country Carnival. The a endance was even be er than on a normal school day, and the uniform and par cipa on were also excellent. The Year 12s really took great responsibility in organising and encouraging the younger students, and set the best example by making a sincere effort in their own race. Congratula ons to Kennedy House on winning the Carnival. Boys who were placed in the top three of their age group will receive medals at an upcoming Assembly. Pastoral Informa on Evening: The College will hold an informa on evening on Wednesday 9 May. The topic of the evening will be “Dealing with the Adolescent”. Paul Gibney will be the presenter. St Patrick’s College Spectators At All CIC & AIC Fixture Games We would like to remind all parents, students and supporters of St Patrick’s College that there is a spectator code of conduct which all MUST abide by whilst at our College’s spor ng fixtures. Our expecta ons for ALL SPC Spectators (without excep on) are:
All Spectators are to use courteous behaviour at all mes without excep on.
Use appropriate language at all mes (swearing of any descrip on on or off the playing field will not be tolerated).
For students, correct dress standards both on and off the playing field at all mes. All Year 8 to 12 students who re main at AIC rugby/football events to spectate MUST change into FULL College Formal Uniform (this will include black belt, College grey socks and black school shoes). All students will be required to wear their College e in Term 2.
ALL Spectators are reminded that we would like posi ve and encouraging cheering only (nega ve cheering and taunts will not be tolerated).
ALL Spectators are to respect the decisions of game referees and venue officials at all mes.
For students, SPC spor ng events are not ‘social func ons’ for our students to interact with girls from other schools. Those students a ending an SPC spor ng event are there to compete on the spor ng field and/or to support other SPC spor ng teams who are compe ng.
All Spectators are reminded that Curlew Park is a non‐ alcohol and non‐ smoking venue. We ask that everyone respect this and refrain from consuming alcohol or smoking within the Curlew Park precinct.
Any St Patrick’s College student or supporter (parent/’old boy’ etc.) who does not follow the above men oned expecta ons on ‘game days’ may very well be asked to leave the spor ng venue. Further ac on may be taken in the preceding week should it be deemed necessary.

1. You wear your normal uniform to school.
2. Move to the school bus stop in SIGNAL ROW at the end of Tutor group.
3. Sign on for the bus in the STUDENT OFFICE by Thursday 3 May if you are compe ng. If you are a first me compe tor with a training history you will be given the Cross Country T Shirt that you are to wear to the event.
4. You compete in either your St Patrick’s Athle c singlet or your cross Country T Shirt. The Athle c Singlets and shorts are for sale from the Clothing Store. 5. You will need to be changed and be ready to run before we arrive 6. The scheduled mes for this meet are as follows: 4.20 pm Under 10 2kms 4.35 pm Under 11 2kms 4.50 pm Under 12/13 3kms 7. Shoes must be worn 8. Drink plenty of water have a snack and warm down well a er your run. 9. Put on warm clothes for the trip home to avoid catching a cold. 10. Enjoy your run 11. Presenta ons for the meet will take place a er each race or on the bus on the way home 12. Depending upon traffic the bus will arrive back at St Patrick’s at approximately 6pm

BIS Junior Inter‐School Cultural Compe on The first BIS compe on for 2012 occurred on Tuesday night. We had boys in each of the compe ons chess, pub‐lic speaking and two deba ng teams. It was the first me most of the public speakers and debaters had par cipated and the boys were very nervous. We arrived at St Laurence’s excited and nervous ready to take on the opposi on. The deba ng teams were great and provided excellent compe ‐on to the opposi on. Although neither of the SPC teams
won they gave it their all and did a fantas c job. Congratula‐ons to Ethan Harvey, speaker of the night for SPC’s affirm‐
a ve team and Joe Grew speaker of the night for SPC’s neg‐a ve team.
The Chess team comprised of 12 boys in grades 5‐7 they all played well against St Laurence’s boys. All the boys did a fantas c job and had fun. Well done. Six students took part in the Public Speaking at St Laurence’s College gaining valuable first night experience at speaking in front of an audience. Brayden West, Tom Kelman, Lochlan Black competed in one room while Jarvis Pyne, Nicholas Gecks‐Preston and Callum Maclean took part in another. Speakers of the Night from St Patrick’s College were Bray‐den West and Nicholas Gecks‐Preston. Congratula ons to all boys involved in the BIS compe on.

It has been a busy couple of weeks for deba ng at St Patricks, with many teams ba ling it out in the second round. Our Year 10 teams both shone in their respec ve short prepara‐on debates. Team Wa s had to argue against a right to pri‐
vacy for celebri es and the young men were incredibly engag‐ing, yet ruthless, in their demoli on of the opposi on. The addi on of novice, but fantas c, debater Ma hew Fegan has only enhanced this well‐oiled machine. Together with Sam Huth, Louis Emery and Johan Baines this is a team to watch. Even their adjudicator seemed lost for words simply quo ng ‘I felt that is was really good’ so many mes we began to won‐der if he knew anything else to say! Team Hewi had to ar‐gue the affirma ve of the topic and were equally as compre‐hensive in their devasta on of the opposing team’s points. Their victory was clear, though the late of arrival of an adjudi‐cator meant that both teams were awarded a victory. This should take nothing away from just how effec ve this team were. Unfortunately both of our Year 12 teams were defeated in their debate about returning cultural artefacts to their coun‐try of origin. This is a tough topic and the young men leading our College in deba ng certainly put in valid arguments on the night. Our Firsts went down by just a point, showing just how close it really was. Similarly, it was an unfortunate loss for our Team Merre in Year 9 who also went down by just one point in their earlier postponed debate. Special men on must be made of Taitaifono Reupena who made his deba ng debut as 3rd speaker for the team. This is a tough role to fill but he did an admirable job. Deba ng at St Patrick’s has a strong Irish con ngent and Fiachra Sides in this team is a pleasure to listen to (both for his deligh ul Irish lilt and his clever arguments).
Our Year 8 teams had mixed results. Team Gibb won their debate on a forfeit (the other team perhaps sensing the in‐credibly enthusias c force about to take them on), though took the opportunity to hone their skills, presen ng their pre‐pared speeches to the adjudicator and receiving some fantas‐c feedback. Should the boys take this feedback on board
they should really improve in future rounds. Team Georgakis/Seers lost narrowly, but as flagged a er their first debate, even the adjudicator was blown away by their impressive deba ng ability, indica ng that the debate was more con‐sistent with the skill level seen in Year 10 deba ng. Condolences The St Patrick’s Community passes on their condolenc‐es to the family of Ms Donna Day, staff member and Connor (Year 12) on the recent passing of their Mother and Grandmother. Our condolences to Ms Heather Kopp, staff member, on the recent passing of her younger brother to Motor Neurone disease. Our condolences to the family of Mrs Kath Taylor, who passed away last week. Kath was the Grandmother of current students Patrick and Kieran and mother to a number of past students. She was also very ac ve in the St Patrick’s community for many years in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult me.
