BIOGRAPHICAL INFO“The idea is to use the compositions of Don VanVliet (Captain Beefheart) as a vehicle forimprovisation and arranging. The band containsa crew of seasoned improvisers from both theworlds of avant-garde jazz and rock, who renderthe music as both a tribute and a creativeadventure in improvising. We use the hornsection to take the place of the vocals, as wellas transmute this guitar-based music intoensemble interplay, between horns and guitarand rhythm section.” – Phillip Johnston

Fast ‘n’ Bulbous is co-led by guitarist GaryLucas and saxist Phillip Johnston. The bandbeen together for over 7 years and has playedfestivals and concerts throughout Europe andthe USA. This is their second album.

Gary Lucas was a member and/or guestsoloist with Captain Beefheart for 4 years andtwo albums. He leads a number of otherprojects and has a large discography of workson a number of labels. Phillip Johnston has written music for anumber of films and has led recordings sincethe early 1980s. He is best known as the co-leader of NY’s beloved Microscopic Septet.
