GUIDED QUESTIONS
What are cells?
What are the two main types of cells?
How do prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells differ?
WHAT ARE CELLS? Cells are the basic unit of life.
What does that mean?• Everything that is living is made up
of cells.living
HISTORY BEHING THE CELL
Robert Hooke, an English scientist, used a microscope to observe slices of cork.
He pointed out that the cork contained tiny rectangular chambers that he called cells. He believe that only plants had cells. His idea stood firm for 200 years.
In 1835, Mathhias Scleiden, a German scientist, used a microscope to study the parts of a plant. He concluded that all parts of a plant are made up of cells.
1836, Theodor Schwann, another German scientist, came to the conclusión that animals also are made up of cells.
THE DISCOVERY CONTINUES…
Meantime, a Scottish scientist named Robert Brown, had discovered an object near the center of the cells, which is now called the nucleus.
Rudolf Virchow, proposed that animal and plant cellls are produced only by the división of cells that already exist.
CELL THEORY1. All organisms are made up of
one or more cells
2. Cells are the basic unit of life in organizations
3. All cells come from other(pre-exixting) cells
CELLS BACKGROUND Cells come in different shapes Cells are different sizes There are many types of cells
Muscle Cells Nerve CellsRed
Blood Cells
THERE ARE 2 TYPES OF CELLS:
Prokaryote
Pro= beforeKaryote= nucleus
Eukaryote
Eu= trueKaryote= nucleus
Karyotic = nucleus
Single-celled organisms have all the characteristics of living things.
Scientists divide organisms into six kingdoms. All living things, including:
Plants Animals Protists Fungi Archaea Bacteria
PROKARYOTIC VS EUKARYOTIC MINI- ASSESSMENT
The following slides will contain either prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells. Number your paper 1-10. When the cell is shown write whether it is a prokaryotic or an eukaryotic cell.
REMEMBER: Prokaryotic means the cell does not have a nucleus
•Eukaryotic means the cell does have a nucleus
PROKARYOTIC VS EUKARYOTIC
Take out a red or green color pencil in order to check your mastery of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EUKARYOTIC AND
PROKARYOTIC
Organisms that have prokaryotic cells are usually bacteria and viruses.
Organisms that have eukaryotic cells are animals and plants.
VACUOLEFluid-filled
cavity inside the cell
Contains digested food and waste materials that are on its way out of the cell
