In the late 1800’s, corruption began to grew in American worker. Their concerns became worse.

• U.S court frequently ruled that strikes were illegal and issued injunctions to force employees back to work.

• A nation wide strike occurred in 1877. Railroad workers struck in the middle of an economic depression.

After receiving a second pay cut within a short period of time, violence erupted.

President Hayes dispatched federal forces to protect the railroad, the first use of such soldiers in a labor matter. The rationale for the show of

strength was the government’s need to protect the mail.
