Dear Friends:
Welcome to autumn at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. We are delighted that you have chosen to join us during this special time of year, and we thank you for your support as we continue our work to present a diverse array of programs rooted in the exploration of the arts and humanities.
Each year, we look forward to the arrival of fall, a time that allows us to unwind after a busy summer and gather with friends and neighbors to enjoy the bounty of our beautiful Sullivan County and its surrounding region. This year, we welcome the return of treasured community traditions like our 17TH ANNUAL HARVEST FESTIVAL, along with new events, such as the LIVE WELL, BE WELL FESTIVAL—A DAY OF PEACE, YOGA, AND WELLNESS—created to honor our heritage while celebrating the goodness of life.
In addition to an array of festivals, fall at Bethel Woods will be complimented by the sounds of talented musicians and artists. Continuing to unite diverse audiences through a common love of music on our grounds, everything from chamber music to blues to cabaret to comedy will be presented inside our intimate Event Gallery. Programs like PROJECT IDENTITY and SATURDAYS AT THE WOODS which explore creativity, freedom of expression, and diverse art forms will also return, ensuring that a love of the arts and humanities are passed on to our youth.
At the award-winning Museum at Bethel Woods, we will continue our work to preserve, present, and interpret the ideals of the 1960s—human fellowship, equal rights, and civic activism—while diving deeper into the cultural significance of our historic landscape. We encourage visitors to learn more about an important time in American history by visiting The Museum’s current special exhibit, THREADS, and attending our engaging and informative lectures and film series.
We thank you again for joining us to enjoy the magic of Bethel Woods throughout the year. Because ticket sales generate only a fraction of the funds necessary to provide our community with such a diverse range of events, performances, and learning opportunities, OUR GROWTH IS DEPENDENT ON YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT. We invite you to learn more about the ways you can help to ensure the sustainability of our historic site, cultural treasure, and meaningful gathering place.
Thank you and enjoy. Sincerely, Darlene FedunChief Executive Officer

Fall is a special time of year—one that serves as a reminder to savor each moment as it passes. When late August gives way to the first hints of the season, we do our best to treasure the days of warmth, beauty, and light knowing that a change is imminent.
Just as sure as the leaves of the trees will begin to change, the annual Harvest Festival at Bethel Woods will return. The treasured celebration of the season welcomes friends and
neighbors to savor the moments under brilliant blue skies as an array of crafters, artists, musicians, farmers, and specialty food purveyors display their talents and goods.
Join us this year for the 17th annual Harvest Festival featuring the return of the Farmers’ Market, Craft Village, Children’s Art Area, Festival Stage featuring performances by local musicians, and an expanded selection of food and vendors.

“Let all our actions, and all our arts, express yoga,” Swami Satchidananda encouraged as he performed the opening ceremony of the iconic 1969 Woodstock festival. Throughout the historic festival, Tom Law, a member of the Hog Farm commune, led yoga exercises between performances, helping to inspire the crowd of nearly 500,000.
Their tranquility had an impact—Woodstock, a watershed cultural moment in our nation’s history, is characterized by an atmosphere of peace
and acceptance that prevailed for all three days of the festival.
On September 12, Live Well, Be Well—A Day of Peace, Yoga, and
Wellness will pay tribute to yoga’s history at our site,
opening with a ceremony by Satchidananda’s Integral Yoga
Institute and featuring a lecture by Tom Law.
Instruction by fitness professional Gwen Lawrence,
music by DJ Hyfi, and a variety of classes for yogis of every ability will create a day dedicated to overall wellness
and exploration of the numerous mental and physical benefits of yoga.

Dubbed by some as the “Napa Valley of the East,” the picturesque landscapes of the Hudson Valley have become
dotted with hundreds of boutique wineries that draw wine enthusiasts from around the country.
The Wine Festival at Bethel Woods has become the destination to discover the best of these offerings, as over 20 regional wineries gather on October 3 for an annual celebration of wine, local food, and handcrafted goods.
Enjoy the intimate opportunity to talk one-on-one with vintners as you sample a selection of reds and whites—all available for purchase. After you’ve chosen your favorites, relax on The Great Lawn overlooking the 1969 Woodstock Festival Field, as music fills the air.
This year’s festival will feature a performance by versatile vocalist, Jenna Esposito, along with an expanded selection of food vendors and wineries.

Did you know, the U.S. now has more beer styles and brands to choose from than any other market in the world? Or, that New York State has seen its number of breweries more than double, to 207 in 2012? These statistics from the National Brewers Association illustrate the growing
popularity of craft beer in the U.S., and in New York State where the industry is responsible for an economic impact of $3.5 billion dollars.
As the industry has grown, so has the Craft Beer Festival at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, returning October 10. The peak of Upstate New York fall foliage season sets the stage for this annual 21+ event that attracts over 20 breweries, as well as fine food

WE GOT THE BLUES IN BETHEL THIS FALL The origins of the Blues can be traced back to the late 1800s, rooted in the abolition of slavery and the rise of juke joints, and stretching back to Africa. Its development is often credited with the newly acquired freedom of African-Americans and frequently took the form of a loose narrative, as early blues singers voiced their personal woes in a harsh world.
While the Blues may be best known for emotional verses that lament injustice and express a longing for a better life, it is also known for its therapeutic quality, as performer and audience alike can lose themselves in the raw emotion of the lyrics and rhythms.
This fall, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts partners with New York Blues Hall of Fame-inductee, Fred Scribner, to present its first ever Blues Festival.
Scribner, a former member of the Levon Helm Band is also known
as the driving force behind Little Sammy Davis,
the original house band during Imus in the Morning’s reign on
MSNBC.
For the October 24 performance in
the Event Gallery at Bethel Woods, Scribner
has curated an impressive line-up of talent—The Chris O’Leary Band, Slam Allen,
Debbie Davies, and Midnight Slim will all bring their heartfelt
melodies to the stage.
The Event Gallery at Bethel Woods is known for the variety of musical styles it presents—from chamber to cabaret, rock to reggae, and beyond. October 24 gives fans a new opportunity to lose themselves in the rhythm of the blues inside the stunning and intimate space.

Countless studies indicate that the arts are critical to the strength of a community. A strong proponent of their transformative power and dedicated to the wellbeing of our community, Bethel Woods has expanded educational offerings rooted in the arts and humanities through countless programs since opening in 2006. Now, these programs are leaving a clear mark on the participants who engage in them.
Whether we are cultivating future photographers through self-expression and career-readiness training, generating cultural engagement
through thought-provoking films, or encouraging socially-conscious dialogue on issues like anti-bullying, Bethel Woods offers a robust array of arts and humanities-based programming each season.
“From the group critiques, I learned to express myself by expressing different emotions through photography,” said Scarlett, a PI: Photography participant this past spring.
This fall will be no different as new programs are unveiled and old favorites return. Project Identity, returns with PI: Beyond the Book which provides teens a no-cost

opportunity to explore the personal story unique to each of them, through journaling, collage, and performance. E3: Engage. Experience. Explore. will bring Exponential Ensemble’s fascinating investigation of math and science through classical music to Bethel Woods and into the community, teaching and performing at local middle schools. Saturdays at the Woods will continue to allow entire families to join us for mornings full of creative expression!
Thousands more school students will contemplate the lasting significance of the 1960s through our Common Core-aligned field trip program, Explore the ’60s. History will come alive when families spend a Night at the Museum. Flicks will continue with quintessential classics like The Exorcist, as well as poignant, through-the-lens pieces like the story of a self-taught 60s-rock photographer told in Her Aim is True.
Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is committed to offering diverse programming and events that immerse participants in the arts and humanities, while appealing to a wide variety of audiences. Seventy-seven children, who might otherwise not have been able to attend, received a scholarship—either full or partial—to participate in arts and humanities programs at Bethel Woods this summer. Local teens found a way to invest a piece of themselves in an original musical theater show this summer. Budding young photographers realized how much they could say through a single photograph.
In all, 4,257 young people attended Saturdays at the Woods, PLAY: Theater, PLAY: Music, Project: Identity Photography, and E3: Engage, Experience, Explore, largely because of your continued support.
You are so important to the work we do at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. Young children and teens are learning creative new ways to become storytellers, photographers, performers, and problem-solvers.
Thank you for helping these young people understand how they can contribute positively to the world around them through exposure to the arts and humanities.
Most important, your continued investment will help build their self worth and send a strong message to these young people that you value them and want them to succeed.
Because of You...

The Museum at Bethel Woods explores the social, political, cultural, and musical transformations of The Sixties while drawing connections to the issues that continue to affect our world today, making history relevant to a new generation.
Located at the original site of the Woodstock festival, The Museum preserves an important moment in American culture. Hosting some of the most iconic performers of all time, The Woodstock Music and Art Fair will forever be remembered as the first festival of its kind. Perhaps more important, however, Woodstock is celebrated for what it symbolized.
Over 500,000 young people were able to gather together peacefully, united by a common love of music and desire to change the world for the better. As stewards of this important place in American history, Bethel Woods ensures the site remains significant to future generations by continuing to unite people through music and a shared desire to contribute positively to their communities.
With moving film and speaker series and rotating special exhibits, The Museum inspires, educates, and empowers all those who visit by presenting a diverse selection of engaging and thought-provoking programming.
Inside its Special Exhibit Gallery, The Museum at Bethel Woods mounts multiple exhibitions each year on a variety of subjects and themes related to the lessons of the ’60s. Currently on display through December 31 is Threads: Connecting 60s and Modern Rockwear. Threads celebrates the undeniable connections between fashion and music—creative expression, joy, happiness—providing an opportunity for visitors to see how the spirit and creativity of both blend in perfect harmony.
The exhibit is co-curated by Andy Hilfiger, fashion designer and musician who once toured with the Ramones, Kid Rock and Blue Oyster Cult. It draws heavily on his personal collection of vintage clothing and the rock couture he has created for rock stars including Stephen Tyler, Keith Richards, and others.

PLANNINGOver a recent 13-month period, a planning committee composed of the board of trustees, staff, and community volunteers at Bethel Woods set out to formulate a comprehensive three-year strategic plan designed to strengthen our not-for- profit’s funding base, expand our programs and audiences, and accomplish our cultural and educational mission. We looked honestly at our strengths and weakness, the opportunities before us, and factors that might hamper our success.
We gave thoughtful consideration to the experiences of comparable arts and education organizations, contemplated new programs and projects, and ways to find new audiences and fundraising activities. We also explored and identified a set of core values and strategies, and we redefined our mission.
4 4 B E T H E L W O O D S C E N T E R F O R T H E A R T S
OUR MISSIONOur mission is to inspire, educate and empower individuals through the arts and humanities. Through these disciplines we explore, share and recreate expressions of the human experience, enriching individuals and communities alike.
OUR VISIONA unique educational, performance, and retreat environment focused on building creative capital to inspire individuals to contribute positively to the world around them.
OUR CORE VALUES• We draw inspiration from our unique place in history.
• We encourage individual creativity and expression.
• We recognize and value the arts and humanities, and their contribution to physical and psychological well-being and its positive impact upon individuals and communities.
• We honor the participation of staff, volunteers, and donors and count as essential their contributions to Bethel Woods’ mission.
• We create a safe and enjoyable environment for all who work and visit.
• We leverage our success for the economic and social benefit of Sullivan County.
• We maintain our grounds and facilities to the highest standards.
• We respect all individuals and value diversity of ideas, abilities, and expression.
Through our new strategic plan we ultimately intend to further the ideals of the 1960s—free and creative expression, peace and human fellowship, and civic activism—and build a vibrant community that will provide enriching and inspiring opportunities for generations to come.

Sitting in the beautiful Bethel Woods Pavilion, surrounded by finely manicured lawns, winding walkways, and myriad varieties of maturing trees, it may be difficult to imagine that the Woodstock festival took place here some 46 years ago. For three plus days in August 1969, half a million young people braved the heat of the summer, the cold Catskills nights, and torrential rains that turned Max Yasgur’s alfalfa field into a giant mud slide.
Much has been written about the festival — about the organizers’ difficulty finding a location for their event, the stressful conditions, the great music, and the coming together of what seemed like an entire generation in one place, in peace and love.
But, until now, there has not been any serious study of the place itself, the entire site of the world’s most famous rock festival. The Museum at Bethel Woods recently commissioned a Cultural Landscape Report to learn more about the site’s history, to
document what the site looked like at the time of the Woodstock festival and what is on the site today, to analyze what remains and what could be revealed with a bit of work, and to make recommendations for how The Museum can best interpret the site for its guests.
The report has already revealed new truths about the Woodstock festival site. We now have a much better understanding of the entire 600 acres Max Yasgur leased for the festival and how much of the landscape, both built and natural, still exists from that time. We also have a better understanding of how important the historic site is to many people, and how our guests may better experience the place where one of the most significant events of the 1960s happened, right in our own back yard!
Watch for upcoming announcements about the Woodstock Festival Grounds Historic Site Cultural Landscape Report and our plans to implement the report’s recommendations.

Every December the Market Sheds at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts transform into a winter wonderland complete with roaring fires, fresh greenery, seasonal music, and a visit from a very special guest. Shop handmade treasures from local crafters, artists, jewelry-makers, and specialty food purveyors as you cross everyone off your list in this perfectly festive environment.
The entire family will enjoy the free community event which includes children’s crafts, a visit from Santa, and music performed by local youth. After photos with Santa and his elves, stay for a showing of the Muppet Christmas Carol inside the cozy Museum Theater to round out the day of holiday cheer.
