Dear Graden Families,
First and foremost, a huge thank you to
Blake Pryor for coordinating our annual
Read-a-thon, his efforts, commitment and
organization coupled with your kind and
generous donations made this a very
successful fundraiser. The fundraiser
yielded over $15,000, WOW! As promised
monies will be allocated to the PTA general
fund, interest groups with assemblies,
technology in the library, field day
enhancements, and recess. This is definitely
an example of synergy.
Believe it or not, this is the time of year we
begin planning for next school year. One
item on the 2019-2020 transition check list is
creating class lists. Due to the importance
of this process, I would like to take this
opportunity to provide parents information
about how this process works. Parents
wanting to provide class placement input
should request a parent input form from the
office prior to Friday, May 3, indicating their
child’s learning style and
description/characteristics of their child’s
personality. PLEASE refrain from asking for
a teacher by name. A great deal of time and
energy is put forth in creating classes to best
meet the instructional needs of all children.
This process involves equalizing ability,
gender, student personalities, and learning
styles.
We are fortunate at Graden to have quality
staff members at all grade levels. Once
class lists are given to staff and teacher
assignments are finalized, it will be nearly
impossible to make changes. Now is the
time to provide information about your child’s
placement for 2019-2020. Due to the
uncertainty of staffing patterns and growth
issues, class assignments will be mailed to
you the first part of August. Thank you for
your understanding and cooperation. If your
child WILL NOT be returning to Graden for
the 2019-2020 school year, please send the
form back that was included in your child’s
3rd quarter report card.

Remember that the beginning and middle
of May are important and busy months of
testing for students in grades 3 – 5. We
appreciate your help and encouragement
during these assessment times.
Standardized tests are created to see how
students from one school or class
compare to other students across the city,
the state, or the country. At Graden we
use these tests to monitor and improve
student performance and to monitor and
improve curriculum and instructional
practices. Dates for assessments are
being finalized and will be sent home with
students in those respective grade levels.
Park Hill's Summer School will provide
transportation and a full-day program for
all elementary and middle school students.
Graden students will attend summer
school at Graden Elementary. Fliers for
enrollment were mailed to all families last
week. You can also visit the district
website at www.parkhill.k12.mo.us to
download your enrollment form and learn
more about summer school 2019.
Enrollment forms will need to be
completed and returned to the Graden
office in order for your child to attend
summer school. There is no fee for
summer school and bus transportation will
be provided.

Reinforcing personal development and leadership; that is what Graden’s
Spotting Great Leaders Club is all about. The Spotting Great Leaders
program is replacing the High Five Program, which was introduced in
December 2012 to recognize personal development and leadership.

Students who are selected each month will receive a certificate which they can redeem at
the 63rd Street Sonic location in Parkville, Missouri. A polka dot with the child’s name will
be displayed on the wall inside Graden Elementary for the month they are awarded. At
the end of each month, the polka dots are taken down and replaced with a new polka dot
honoring students for the next month. We are so proud of our Graden Leaders!
Dear Graden Families,
It finally feels like Spring is coming and we are over the weekly snow day craziness!
During counseling lessons this month, I worked with your students on fostering
courage and perseverance. I believe perseverance is an imperative character trait for
students to have in order to be successful in school and beyond. Life will not be
without challenges, adversity, and obstacles. Sometimes we will fail to complete a task
or may be scared to rise to an occasion. Exhibiting perseverance and courage allows
students (and adults!) to overcome these fears or odds and be successful despite
tribulations. Below are the topics addressed at each grade level:
• Kindergarten: Leo the Lightning Bug and The Magic of Perseverance
• 1st Grade: Does This Look & Sound Like Perseverance?
• 2nd Grade: How Can We Show Courage?
• 3rd Grade: After the Fall Book & Game Show
• 4th Grade: Vision Boards
• 5th Grade: The Stairway to Success
In April, counseling lessons will focus on college and careers. I am SO EXCITED
about this unit because April 22nd - April 26th will be a College and Career Themed
Week at Graden! YAY! Even at the elementary level, it’s important to foster career
awareness and instill a culture of self-empowerment within our students. This is also
directly related to our Comprehensive School Improvement Plan goal of each student
graduating college, career, and life ready! As the week approaches, more information
will be sent home. Below are the current themes:
• Monday: Hats Off to College & Career (students/staff wear hats of their choice)
• Tuesday: My Future is Bright! (Sunglasses and bright colors)
• Wednesday: College Gear Day
• Thursday: We Want To Be….. (Dress up like your dream career)
• Friday: Graden School Spirit Day!
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions at all or
would like to meet face to face. I can be reached at cetolac@parkhill.k12.mo.us or by
phone at 816-359-5647. It is going to be another great month in the Hive!
